    Default Mortis Thule (OOC)

    Ark of Lost Souls

'On this day we carve our legend in the flesh of every alien we slay!' - Grimaldus, Reclusiarch of the Black Templars

"What do you mean *they* cut the power? How could they cut the power, man? They're animals!" - Private Hudson

Taking all eight of you to make it easier to cope with any drop outs. Let's see how far we can get in this.

    The IC

    Posting Rules

-Expected rate of posting is at least once every other day.
-If you donít post in 48 hours, I will autopilot your character.
-If you donít post in a week, I reserve the right to kill off your character.
-Going on hiatus with prior warning is absolutely fine: the above rules apply to unexpected disappearances. Drop me a notification before youíre going away/losing your internet access/what have you, and Iíll happily play your character as an NPC until you can return

    Rolls

-Make all rolls using the forum dice roller either in a spoiler box or on the ooc thread
-Some rolls that you shouldnít know if you have succeeded or failed at and Perils / Psychic Phenomena Iíll roll in secret.
-To save time and for the sake of momentum Iíll roll Initiative at the start of the encounter, allowing you to get straight to your post rather than waiting for others.

    Combat

-When in combat, do not wait to post in sequence of initiative: post whenever you are free to post. If your actions depend on someone ahead of you in the initiative order, you can leave conditional instructions OOC. I will conduct my rolling for each combat round in this thread, and post an IC summary that signifies the end of the current round & the start of the next.

    Notes

    Spoiler
    Show

    - All-out Attacks and Guarded Attacks can be made in conjunction with a Swift Attack or Lightning Attack, each remaining a Full Action and allowing the attacker to use their full number of attacks. The +20% from an AOA only applies to the first attack made; the -10% from a Guarded Attack applies to both attacks.
    - Psychic Powers which require some sort of roll to hit can be dodged. If they don't need a roll, they cannot be dodged.
-Raven Guard and their successors can exchange whatever power armour they roll to Mk.6 power armour
-Encumbrance: You can't easily carry more than two heavy or special weapons in addition to bolters, pistols, melee weapons etc. You can requisition more if you want but need to keep it stored somewhere when you aren't using it. If you have the backpack ammo supply, you need to specify what type of ammo is inside it. If you are carrying multiple heavy weapons I'm going to impose penalties to Concealment if nothing else.

    Unnatural Strength and Toughness
    (Repeated for clarity)

    Spoiler
    Show

Mentioned so everyone knows about it. Space Marines get Unnatural Strength and Unnatural Toughness which double your StrB and TB. They also get power armour which gives you +20 to Str when you're wearing it. The book says you work out the benefits of power armour on your StrB after unnatural strength (see the description of Unnatural Strength on Core 136).

This means that a Strength 40 Space Marine has Strength 60 when rolling Strength for climbing or whatever, but has a StrB of 10 in melee. You don't add 20 to Str then apply unnatural strength to double it. You're all powerful enough already

    Spoilers
-A spoiler titled 'X Only' is intended only for the eyes of the player playing the character X. Please don't read 'em if they're not intended for you.

Please put your character sheet in your first post in this thread. Use the Discord or the recruitment thread if you have questions

    Show

So I don't have to look everything up as often

    Kvothe
    Stoic
Master of Shadows (reroll stealth tests, passive so always available)
Exploit Weakness (4 cohesion, half action, not sustained -The squad works in concert to exploit the foeís weaknesses and deliver potent, strategic blows. As a Half
Action, any Battle-Brother in Support Range may single out an enemy. Until the beginning of that Battle-Brotherís next turn, all members of the Kill-team may re-roll damage rolls against that target (the second result must be taken). Only one target may be singled out at a time.)
Evasive manoeuvres (Full Action, 3 cohesion, sustained - Battle-Brothers of the Raven Guard favour agilely avoiding their opponentís main attack over a stalwart defence. All Battle-Brothers in Support Range no longer trigger the effects of Overwatch from an enemy. In addition, Battle-Brothers in Support Range gain a +20 bonus to all tests to avoid Pinning.)
None Shall Escape the Emperor's Wrath (+5 BS, -10 to dodge in melee)
Errant Power Armour (benefit to getting shot in the head)
    Beaky helmet (+15 to autosenses)
    Battle Damage on armour
Immovable Warrior (When using a heavy weapon behind cover gains the Sturdy trait and +10 to BS)
Sturdy (Affects attempts to grapple or use Takedown on Kvothe)
Has Demolition, Trade (Cryptographer), Ciphers (Xenos) and CL (Jericho Reach) +10
    Mighty Shot (Extra dakka)
Watcher: (A Battle-Brother with this Mark of Distinction gains a +10 to all Perception Tests and a +1 to their Perception Bonus. The GM may also allow them to make tests to notice things even when he is not actively looking for danger or anything unusual (such as to spot unusual Ďsilentí communication between Ďalliesí in a formal ceremony or notice a foe is carrying a wound from the subtle way it moves). The Battle-Brother can also aid others in their understanding of their surrounding and once per encounter can give a fellow Battle-Brother (provided they are in Support Range) a re-roll on any Intelligence or Perception Test (including Skill Tests based on these Characteristics).
    Lascannon, Signum Link

    Tyrax
    Hot Blooded
    Various Forbidden Lores
Flesh Render (Roll 1 extra dice and pick the highest for tearing melee weapons)
A Taste for Blood (When the Battle-Brother makes a Charge Action against a foe which has been bloodied (i.e. has suffered at least a single wound) he adds 5m to his charge distance and gains an additional +10 to his Weapon Skill Test in addition to the normal benefits for charging.)
Reckless Assault (Free Action, 2 cohesion, sustained - When the Battle-Brother and other members of his Kill-team within Support Range make a Charge Action
they may choose for it to be a Reckless Assault. A Reckless Assault follows all the normal rules for Charging (as described on page 238 of the DEATHWATCH Core Rulebook), however, if he managed to kill his foe with his Charge attack he may immediately make another Charge Action as a Free Action provided there is another foe within charge range. A Battle-Brother may only make one additional charge as part of a Reckless Assault even if he manages to also slay his second foe with his attack. The drawback of making a Reckless Assault is that the Battle-Brother completely ignores any kind of defence against his foes and as a result loses his Reaction for that turn.)
Feast of Flesh (Reaction, 2 cohesion, sustained - When a Battle-Brother affected by Feast of Flesh is wounded by Damage from a melee attack, they may spend their reaction to channel this Damage into their next attack. The Battle-Brother adds the Damage he has just suffered (after reduction from armour and Toughness) to the
Damage he inflicts with his next melee attack. If he misses with this subsequent attack then this Damage is lost. Using this power
does not prevent the Damage suffered by the Battle-Brother.)
Depths of Rage (20m, Sustained, The Librarian can use this power to grant the Frenzy Talent to himself and a number of allies equal to his Psy Rating. While under the effects of Depths of Rage, the Flesh Tearer Librarian counts as possessing the Mental Rage Talent. In addition, while using the Depths of Rage, the Librarian adds 1 to his Psy Rating and can choose make an attack using a psychic power rather than make melee attacks as required by the Frenzy Talent.)
Mental Rage (Use psychic powers while frenzied)
Mental Ascension (The Battle-Brother has gained an enhanced understanding of his surrounding and the interaction of all things, allowing him to consider myriad perspectives and possibilities. This has the game effect of allowing him a number of re-rolls equal to his Rank each game session on any Intelligence, Perception or Willpower Tests (or Skill Tests based on these Characteristics). Alternatively, he may use a re-roll to instead double a Characteristic Bonus based on one
of these three Characteristics for the purposes of a single test or effect (such as doubling his Perception Bonus to enhance his senses).
Grisly Trophies (Benefit to WP tests to avoid the effects of Black Rage and Red Thirst when he has them, affects NPC disposition)
Rite of Sanctioning (Bloody Tears - stone and wood in 3d10 weep blood, pictures or statues in the area appear to be crying blood)
Errant (histories? Blood of the Enemy (Fear 1) or Last Survivour (Extra Fate Point) and benefits of being shot in the head)
Force Sword - Fluffed as chainsword with no Tearing

    Dhiiga
Scion of Sanguinus - Need to recover Dhiiga's body and wargear if he's slain or Xeno takes a Renown hit ---Xeno can enter Frenzy as a free action when in support range - Dhiiga needs to have Frenzy to do this
Frenzy - Various benefits and penalties, must melee if possible
    Can pick a tactics skill
    The Craving
Duty Unto Death (Ignore the effects of stunning, injury and fatigue in combat)
    Golden Icon (Purity Focus)
Mk. 7 Armour (Pristine Condition - More AP until injury or the armour gets dirty, -3 Inititiative)
Guardian of Purity (Reduce corruption suffered by the squad to minimum of 1)
Blood Frenzy (Once per combat for 1 round, reroll all damage dice with melee weapons, RF on 9-10)

    Attano
Master of Shadows (reroll stealth, passive so always available)
    Cybernetic auspex
Beaky Armour (Blood of the Enemy - Fear (1), Heroes Shame (-10 to Command tests), +15 to per (+25 with Heightened Senses))
Wings of Angels (The Assault Marine may add 20 metres the movement rate of his Jump Pack with a successful Challenging (+0) Pilot (Personal) Test. When making a Charge whilst using this ability, the Space Marine adds an additional 1d5 Damage to any melee attacks. This ability only functions when in Solo Mode.)
Deed - Ghost Ships (previous experience in the Jericho Reach and the Orpheus Salient, penalty to dealing with the Navy)

    Octavius
Mark 7 (Bring Death from Afar - never take penalties for moving and shooting, count a heavy weapon as a basic weapon for the purposes of moving and firing on semi or full auto)
Tactical Expertise (Tac Marine - Command test -20 to share the benefits of Ultramarine squad mode abilities with the rest of the squad)
Tactical Expertise (Mark - When squad leader, +3 cohesion, +10 to command and tactics tests - anyone in squad mode inflicts +1 pt of damage on hordes with melee or ranged weapons)
    Duty unto Death (See Dhiiga)
Strike Team Specialist (Scholastic Lore (Codex) +10, If you are the leader, you may subtract 1 point from the Cohesion cost (to a minimum of 1) for any Codex Attack Pattern once per battle. Also, you may implement (and benefi t from) any Attack Pattern from any other Chapter in your Kill-team by adding +1 to the Cohesion cost.)
Favoured Son (Fel bonus to dealing with Imperial military)
Extra Ultramarines Squad Modes (See First Founding)

    Alisan
    Bolter Mastery
Beaky Armour (+15 Per bonus for +25 total, A Fury Like Lightning +5 Agl +1 Initiative, Bring Death From Afar no penalties for moving and shooting)
    Raptor Solo Mode
    Raptor Chapter Trapping
    Advances

    Xavier
    Resistance Heat
Mk. 7 (Thy Strength Be Legend)
Fireborn (The Battle-Brother may either add the Proven (2) Quality (see page 96) to, or remove one of the Unreliable, Unbalanced, or Unwieldy qualities from any
one weapon he possesses either as Standard Issue or as an item of Signature Wargear, due to his skill at creating and maintaining his wargear.)
Proven (Treat any rolls of 1 on damage dice as the Proven rating, 2 in this case)
Improve Cover (The Techmarine can add a number of Armour Points equal to his unmodified Intelligence Bonus to any cover (see page 246). Improving cover requires one Full Action.)
    Assuming it's taken
Flesh is Weak (This Talent grants the character the Machine Trait p.133) with Armour Points equal to the number of times this Talent has been taken)
Machine (Machines do not breathe, are immune to the effects of a vacuum, extremes of cold, any mind-influencing psychic effect, and their Armour Points apply toward fire damage. Machines are also resilient to injury, having 1 to 5 Armour Points for each location. This number is indicated next to the trait.

    Cadmus
    Scornful
Deceive, Forbidden Lores, Demolitions, Drive, Interrogation
Storm Bolter, various explosives, Melta Gun
    Bolter Mastery
Mk 7 Power Armour (A Fury like lightning +5 Ag, +1 Init)
Stoic Defence (6 temporary extra wounds while movement is reduced to 1/2 Ag bonus)
Robe of Secrets (+3 to Forbidden Lore Astartes)
Insanity Points for Initiate of Secrets (6+whatever was gained later)

    Attack Patterns
Sustained Suppression: Free Action, 2 cohesion, sustained
Effects: The Dark Angel and those in support range may continue to act normally while maintaining Overwatch

Angel's Wrath: Full Action, 2 cohesion, sustained
Effects: The Dark Angelsí righteous disdain for their foes and their urgent fervour to demonstrate their devotion and loyalty to the Emperor makes them decisive and ruthless in battle. There are few things that can stand before so driven and focussed an assault. While this ability remains in effect, all attempts to Dodge or Parry the attacks of the Battle-Brother and those in Support Range suffer a Ė10 penalty.

    Defensive Patterns
Immovable Defence: Full Action, 2 cohesion, sustained
Effects: The Dark Angel and those in support range gain +10 BS, +10 Dodge and an additional +4 AP to all locations as long as they remain stationary

With every last breath: Free Action, 2 cohesion, sustained
Effects: While even a single Dark Angel still stands in defence of the Imperium, no enemy of Man shall be suffered to live. So resolute are they that even the most grievous of injuries will not cause them to falter. While this ability remains in effect, the Battle-Brother and those in Support Range may ignore the effects of Fatigue and cannot be Stunned.

Oath of Vengeance for leading (gain cohesion when you pass cohesion tests by two or more degrees of success)

    Spoiler: Previous Missions
    Show
    1. A small explorator fleet had been scouting a section of the Jericho Reach for potential planets to strip mine. One world, rich in sought after minerals, was found, but was inhabited by a hostile species of xeno. The fleet called in a favor from the Deathwatch to help them clear the planet of their foes, and Kvothe was one of those sent. The kill-team worked to target key points in the xenos war effort, ensuring that they were unable to bring their full might to bear against the Mechanicus' forces.

    2. To the worry of many a splinter of a Tyranid Hive Fleet began to descend upon an Imperial system, one of some importance to continued operations in the area.
Kvothe was part of one of several teams sent to destroy enough of it to render it less of a threat, and the Raven Guard marine performed his duty admirably.
While another team drew away a significant portion of a synapse's defenses, Kvothe was able to personally able to destroy the 'mind', greatly weakening the fleet's presence in their battlefield and allowing the joint Imperium forces to gain ground against their foe.

    3. A Hive World was facing a great deal of troubles in the form of an uprising against the planetary governor, and the Inquisition suspected that the flames of revolution were being stoked by a chaos cult. Wanting to put this treason down decisively, the local Inquisitor requested a kill-team to ensure that it was put down...decisively. So began a series of missions into the Underhive, as Kvothe and his fellows used their skills in recon and interrogation to uncover the head of a Tzeentchian cult seeking to use the bloody revolution as a catalyst to transform the planet into a Daemon world! Fortunately for the countless Imperial citizens the team was able to put down the cult's leaders before that could occur and bring about a relatively quick end to the civil war.

    Character Background:
    Spoiler
    Show
Brother Attano was chosen for the Raven Guard at the same time as Brother Kvothe. They assisted each other with the trials, hunting their ravens together through the forests of Deliverance. Inducted into the 10th company, they were split up upon graduating to the ranks of the full Battle-Brothers. Kvothe to the 9th company Devastators, and Attano to the Assault Squads of 8th company.

From there he served with distinction and honour, excelling in melee combat, but never quite managing a promotion to sergeant. Attano was destined to serve in the shadows of others, singularly competent at everything except leadership, and tending towards individual heroics. He was deployed on Operation Chronos, battling against the enslavers and picking up an enduring hatred for both the foul xenos, and the White Scars chapter. Their inaction cost him many brothers, and it is not a grudge he could easily overcome. Thrown into crusade after crusade, Attano finally earned some measure of distinction aboard the ghost ships of Battlegroup Argo. His studies into the habits of Xenos creatures, and his knowledge of how to fight them, is part of the reason that his squad was one of the ones that made it out alive. That expedition earned him a trip to the Deathwatch, where it is hoped that he'll build upon his knowledge and skills, and maybe learn to work better as part of a team.

    Here is Octavius Sheet.

    Spoiler: Background
    Show

The body gets tired but never the will, never the soul, never the belief in the emperor. Never the belief in the the codex.
Octavius thinks as he checks his stormbolter, praying to the spirit inside, admiring the craftmenship.
He touchs the single line where an enemy blade grated the metal before dying.
Each line, mark and damage, equaled a hundred, a thousand of enemies fallen.

But for Octavius life as a marine was everything - he reveled in the comaraderie, the companionship. His personality, his faith, his indomitable will and his keen tactical mind helped him gain the trust of the others, and so a leadership was natural.
For many years he led a scout team, helping form the spine of the ultramarines. He was always though as a good and fair leader, and achieved some recognition in that area.
Now he is assigned to the deathwatch, where he can bring his many talents to fight, control, restrain and destroy the threats to the empire.
He is happy being the shield and the gladius of the emperor.

    Missions!
Spoiler: Mission the Introduction: Clearing a Space Hulk
    Show
In reality the first mission he had taken as a new Blood Drinker a space hulk had fallen prey to the forces of Chaos while jumping through the Warp. When it emerged it could hardly be recognized and Brother Dhiiga was told to help clear it out. It was here that he developed a fond appreciation for missile launchers, using them to great effect to clear out whole rooms of cultist as opposed to dealing with the hordes of lesser enemies. Slow and steady would win the battle for the group of Marines and thatís exactly what happened up until the point that they reached the bridge.

A group of Chaos Space Marines who appeared to be Alpha Legion were behind the entire thing. It was there that Dhiiga helped battle the foul influence with sword and Exsanguinator, showing surprising talent for parrying considering the fact that he was supposed to be a medic. Wounds didnít phase him as he focused on retrieving the sacred gene-seed from the traitors so that the Adeptus Mechanicus could potentially sanctify it once more. After almost ten minutes of battle they managed to succeed and were retrieved while techpriests got busy salvaging the hulk.

Spoiler: Mission the Servitor: Working with Adeptus Mechanicus
    Show
The first major mission Brother Dhiiga participated in with a mixed group was also the first that he formally requested the battle servitor that would be known as SAN. Commissioned by the Blood Drinker as a means to satisfying his swelling bloodlust the servitor was dutifully created and gifted, if such a world could be used, to the Space Marine in exchange for a recovery mission. The Omega Vault has opened once more and Dhiiga was going to explore it with some of the tech priests and fellow indebted marines. They gathered their gear and entered the mysterious tomb without any immediate issues.

Within were objects that Dhiiga could only barely comprehend but the tech priests seemed to fawn over endlessly. For nearly four hours they catalogued what was inside without issue, the apothecary starting to show an increasing interesting in the various chemicals that had once been locked away. Yet at the four hour mark there seemed to be some unknown trigger as alarms began to blare and the scholars quickly stopped what they were doing. Automated drones that Dhiiga could only compare to the Tauís infernal devices (when he inevitably fought them) came to life and quickly the group had to retreat, most of the Marines providing covering fire while Dhiiga did his best to provide melee support when some of the drones attempted to dive bomb the group. While he wouldnít consider it a success the tech priests considered the injuries sustained worth it and didnít question SAN from that point on.

Spoiler: Mission the Blood Priest: Working with Tyran
    Show
He had managed to perform minor operations since his introduction to combat before he was eventually called to aid the Deathwatch. A group of Blood Angels and their successor chapters had been called to clear out a Tau infestation within the Jericho Reach. The first group had missed three reports and the second group was being sent in to investigate and recover their gene-seed if at all possible. Another Blood Angel successor was a part of his team who introduced himself as Brother Tyran and the duo worked out tactics together on the way to the planet.

A Flesh Tearer by chapter, Tyran helped bring out the bloodlust within Dhiiga as the priest learned to help fuel their shared rage quicker than either would have otherwise been able to achieve. From their landing zone, cleared out by the Thunderhawk, they revelled in the melee combat that their chosen foe was weaker against. Stealth was of no concern for them as the combat quickly devolved into urban warfare and they fought their way slowly but surely to the governorís bunker where the former group had last reported from. The governorís mansion was barely held together as they could quickly deduce that the Marines were dead.

The filthy xeno were in the middle of stripping the armor from the corpses when they came upon them. An Ethereal was present leading the forces while several Gueívasa helped their tau captors in their heretical task. Tyran helped distract the leader while Dhiiga took care of the gene-seeds, Brothers Naaman and Haakon took care of the rabble. Their last task before they called for extraction involved calling in a bombardment to insure that no technology would be lost to the alien threat.

For anyone who didn't see it on the discord I'll update this tonight. If anyone has any other business on Erioch we can leave it behind a timeskip. You'll have a bit of time between arming and boarding the frigate.

I'm assuming it's Octavius for leader and Oath of the Emperor.

Notorious - If you want to roll to see how you do, roll a few rounds of shooting in the ooc with the weapon and the range modifiers of your choice. I'll treat it like the firing range in an FPS prologue.

If anyone wants to murder combat servitors, do the same with a few rounds of melee.

If anyone want's to spar with each other, roll an opposed WS test.

Bojo - You've been prepared enough by the Deathwatch to know that you're looking at more than enough Tyranid Rippers to cause a problem for you if they noticed you. The visual distortion is caused (obviously) by the scales of a Lictor, only this one appears to be much larger then the ones commonly encountered. It is perhaps twice the size of a normal example.

They're appearing from all directions and not attacking you as a group, so there's no way you can hit them all with the same attack. When they turn into a Horde that will be different. That said, I'm going to give the Smite and the Leaper Mine a chance of affecting more targets.

Tyrax's Smite easily kills the Fury it hits and destroys (1d3)[3] more Daemons.

The Leaper mine goes and sprays shrapnel over a wide area catching (1d3+3)[4] Daemons in the blast radius.

Psychic powers ignore the Daemonic trait, but the Leaper Mine isn't quite as powerful. As in some of them might only end up wounded.

Attack: (1d100)[65] to hit - ok, that's a hit, with the bonus for the charge.
    (1d10+22)[27] damage, AP 7

This was an unusual combat to start with. Next time I'll start in the Hunting Grounds with something more conventional.

I'm going to start recording status effects in every gm post in a separate spoiler box so I have less to keep track of. Personal stuff you can probably keep track of yourself.

    Spoiler: Something like this
    Show

    Cohesion 11/13

    Marines in Solo Mode:

    Marines in Squad Mode:

Lead by Example: +6 to all tests for Octavius and anyone in support range who is in squad mode, and Octavius can bestow a reroll on any one test. Reroll includes fel bonus

Dhiiga is frenzied until the end of the combat

-20 to Per tests due to the ship shaking and the screams from outside

Oath of the Emperor +10 to WP, but also

Daemonic Presence: -10 to WP when in 10 metres of the Furies because Daemons are unnerving

Into the Jaws of Hell: Everyone is immune to fear as long as Yngvar is here

(2d10)[10] Insanity! - average. Yay insanity.

(1d100)[9] Toughness! - super passed. Attano is tough.

(1d100)[50] Willpower! - possibly passed. Attano's WP is 42, but we have +10 for the Oath. Assuming that the penalty for nearby furies no longer counts, this is good.
