I think Jack Tarr is specifically the name of Trelawney's sidekick, which is presumably transferred every time she gets a new one. He was in that side-comic Cheyenne Wright brought out a while back.

Indeed. Here's the side comic for reference.

Completely unrelated, I came across this page on my Nth reread. What is the College of Mysteries, and just how involved is the Queen with the Cthulhu cultists?

    Right-o, guvna!

While Captain Blish may or may not be a titled landholder, in the context of the strip I strongly suspect that Gil is using it as term of pseudo-respect rather than an actual title.

Oooh, I was not aware of this. Thanks!

Indeed, it would seem that is why Captain Blish is referring to Gil as "a new Jack Tarr"... which makes me wonder if Trelawney Thorpe goes through so many sidekicks that whomever writes the novels of her adventures doesn't bother to learn their names, so they all earn the 'title' of 'Jack Tarr'?

The Baron was right: Gil IS very likeable.

If this was a Rom-Com, Trelawney Thorpe would be falling for him right about now.

I really hope all the murder and mayhem hasn't been Albia's idea of how to keep Agatha happy and occupied. That would be a really callous disregard for life.

"Jack Tar" is an old term for sailors, which the character "Tarr" draws his name from.

Yeah I think squire is also like the lowest noble ranking possible. I read a few books where the main character saved the noblemans daughter and in turn was made a squire, given some small plot of land, that sort of thing. It wasnt some huge thing like a town or something, its basically the equivalent of a nice house and the land to support it along with some farmers who work for you now. Still a big deal for a commoner who would likely have as their highest hope a shop with a living area over the top for themselves and their future family once they learned a trade. Its also strange because more often I see squire used as a job title, basically working for a knight to take care of his gear and such. Kind of a higher status servant who gets training in being a knight himself eventually. Im not certain but im fairly sure even then the squire was probably someone at least related to someone important, like the son of a nobleman himself as I doubt they randomly grabbed street urchins to work for a knight as a page boy then eventual squire. I dunno, its all strange to me.

Not really, just adapting an older title to a new reality. The path used to be page=>squire=>knight, with various degrees available to knights (for instance, a knight-banneret is the first rank where you can sport your own flag on the lance). Pages had no real standing, but squires are moving up (they're at the point where a marriage alliance can be considered, which is useful when said teenaged squire knocks up one of the teenaged ladies-in-waiting being fostered by your wife).

Once society moved past the point where metal-clad guys on horses were a realistic force, the whole social structure looked kind of stupid. So they adjusted it to land-ownership (which is what it technically stood for in the first place), with squire at the bottom rank. Technically, you need to be a baronet to be called 'sir' under this system, but peasants don't care about the finer points of etiquette.

No, I don't know what would happen if Sparkworld crashed into Monty Python. Hopefully, that question will never be answered.

Weird speech bubbles. Not only is one of them swapped, but Agatha's is now all angular.

Forget Double-Break Tarvek, I'm more worried about Troll Agatha. Nothing good follows when she gets trollish. It usually seems to happen when she's touching on Lucrezia's persona.

So Tarvek just did the old war movie trick of shoving a squadmate into the open to draw fire? Sounds kind of pallid for his family's scheming habits.

I understood he's taking a reading/sample from our transdimensional visitor here in order to calibrate the device with the right harmonics to attract the gribblies, using that vaguely tuning-fork-looking device in his hand. But yeah, I can see Tarvek "calibrating" our friend into bait instead.

Huh! Never even realized this thread was here, until I did a websearch for "Gomorrity." I should have figured that folks with enough taste to be OOTS fans would overlap considerably with GG fans.

Nice to see old roommates (Kaja, not Phil) doing so well. These two are the only webcomics I follow, and I was just re-reading some stuff that hasn't made it into books yet. The guesses in a previous thread about what that sin might be are interesting.

Does rather depend on how long "this part" actually took.

A thought - The vozzler notes that the creatures are trying to eat each other. Does that mean the two creatures that are fighting, or does it also mean the creatures within the composite that Dr. Vapnoople summoned are trying to eat each other?

    Only lots more exciting/dangerous/potentially fatal.
