Re: Favorite Quotes
I myself enjoy Bacon (Though The tiger can go to hell for all I care):
"Little Fly,
Thy summer's play
My thoughtless hand
Has brush'd away.
.......
For I dance,
And drink, and sing,
Till some blind hand
Shall brush my wing.
......
Then am I
A happy fly,
If I live
Or if I die."
"Does he who contemns poverty, and he who turns with abhorrence
From usury feel the same passion, or are they movèd alike?
How can the giver of gifts experience the delights of the merchant?
How the industrious citizen the pains of the husbandman?
How different far the fat fed hireling with hollow drum,
Who buys whole corn-fields into wastes, and sings upon the heath!
How different their eye and ear! How different the world to them!"

What happened was, Canada was the 'good' sibling and we were the rebel cool one, and we go up there and tell Canada that Mom (england) is insufferable and we're gonna run away on our motorcycle because she doesn't get us. Then we asked if Canada wanted to come along and he was all like "Noooo, mummy will be cross with me! *cries, snuggling blanket*" and so we were like "pft, whatev" and then France won the American Revolution. Then later, Canada asked politely if it could move out, but by then it was the 40 year old creep who lives with his parents, so England was like "Yes, in fact I'm kicking you out. They want to deliver vast amounts of information over the Internet. And again, the Internet is not something that you just dump something on. It's not a big truck. It's a series of tubes. And if you don't understand, those tubes can be filled and if they are filled, when you put your message in, it gets in line and it's going to be delayed by anyone that puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material

Re: Favorite Quotes
Umm, we're actually both quoting William Blake. One of the greatest of London visionaries, poets, and radicals (although, sadly, his drawing skills left a lot to be desired).
'The Fly' is one of my least favourite in The Songs of Experience - I think both its theme and scansion are closer to poems in The Songs of Innocence.
'The Tiger' is one of the best poems in English literature - look at the theme: the nature of evil, the nature of the creator - talk about big. Look at the rhythm, the drama, the imagery - it's just such a wonderful poem for reading aloud.
Since we're on Blake, and the Songs of Experience, I just have to add:
"But most, through midnight streets I hear
How the youthful harlot's curse
Blasts the new-born infant's tear
And blights with plagues the marriage hearse."
(Yay, for syphilis. )
Now Bacon also had some good ideas. I'm not too enamoured of his views on marriage, but he did give us:
"Reading maketh a full man, conference a ready man, and writing an exact man...Histories make men wise, poets, witty; the mathematics, subtle; natural philosophy, deep; moral, grave; logic and rhetoric, able to contend."Last edited by dish; 2008-01-07 at 04:47 AM.

Re: Favorite Quotes
At least you got all the quotations correct, which is, in this thread, the main thing.
"That is the best part of beauty, which a picture cannot express; no, nor the first sight of the life."
"Nay, there is no stond or impediment in the wit but may be wrought out by fit studies, like the diseases of the body may have appropriate exercises."
Why don't you like the Tiger? (Wait, don't tell me here. Is there a current poetry thread in the media section?)

"You see; if I find out what I have, then I can make it so that no one else can figure it out. On the other hand, if I can't figure it out, I'm quite sure that anyone who does is a witch. And you know what I do to witches." - Me, in regards to pie.
"Avenge O Lord thy slaughter'd Saints, whose bones
Lie scatter'd on the Alpine mountains cold,
Ev'n them who kept thy truth so pure of old
When all our Fathers worship't Stocks and Stones,
Forget not: in thy book record their groanes
Who were thy Sheep and in their antient Fold
Slayn by the bloody Piemontese that roll'd
Mother with Infant down the Rocks. Their moans
The Vales redoubl'd to the Hills, and they
To Heav'n. Their martyr'd blood and ashes sow
O're all th' Italian fields where still doth sway
The triple Tyrant: that from these may grow
A hunder'd-fold, who having learnt thy way
Early may fly the Babylonian wo."

"It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye."
- Antoine de Saint Exupéry, The Little Prince.
"As the bird trims her to the gale,
I trim myself to the storm of time,
I man the rudder, reef the sail,
Obey the voice at eve obeyed at prime:
'Lowly faithful, banish fear,
Right onward drive unharmed;
The port, well worth the cruise, is near,
And every wave is charmed.' "
- Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Terminus."
