Re: Secret of mana IC thread
Coney
Coney, perhaps because her own armour is made of feathers and her own fur, sees her companions begin to be affected by the cold, but is not feeling it herself. Darting further away from the door, just in case, she focuses her most potent fire magic on a spot on the wall behind the mammoth archon (not the archon mammoth, which would be just as scary but quite different) and lets fly with a blast of flames.
"Maybe that'll warm things up a bit."
Spoiler: OOCConey takes a 5' step SW and then uses a full action to castc an Empowered Fireball, making it a 4th level slot because of Easy Metamagic. (9d6)[33] x 1.5 = 49 fire damage, reflex DC 19 for half.

Re: Secret of mana IC thread
"Ugh, get off me you icky.. ugh.." Larimar says. He also notes that his arrows barely seem effective. Ah, of course. Because he was a werelion...
He takes a step closer to Coney again, slightly edging away from the grell, and slightly opening up his window for a shot against Megralras, and fires away!
Spoiler: pewLet's see how the archon likes alchemical silver.

Re: Secret of mana IC thread
This is ... not good. Despite my weakness spell, he's still hitting just as hard ... Perhaps a golem?
"Do you really think you're doing the right thing here?" Ken demands of his invisible foe.
Ken can fight what he can't see, but not very well. Though loathe to spend the time to do so, he decides to try to even the odds a bit.
OOC: Automatic: Ring of Blades (1d6+9)[10]
Swift: Blademage's Edge (for next round)
Standard: Defensively cast Heroics (Blind-Fight) on self.
This allows him to retain his Dexterity bonus to AC vs invisible attackers, so he should have AC 28.

Re: Secret of mana IC thread
Coney
Coney tilts her head, watching the Archon first lose a limb and then replace it with a set of tentacles, all in the course of an explosive few seconds. Personally, she had always felt that limbs were overrated, and certainly wouldn't want to get an extra nine of them in the middle of battle. I mean, how do you even keep track of where they all are? The proprioreceptors in the Archon's brain must be on fire now, trying to make sense of all of this new data!
Wait. That gave her an idea. If he was suddenly focused on all those new limbs, maybe it was the perfect time to muddle up some of the originals. Say, with a bit of
"Grease!"
Weaving her not-at-all-like-tentacles ears around, Coney focused a blast of squishy slipperiness under the Archon's feet.
Spoiler: OOCConey 5' steps SE, then casts Grease under the Archon's feet. Reflex DC 17 or fall prone immediately. If save is made, he will still need to make a DC 10 balance check or be unable to move from that square, and will have to repeat the reflex save."We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be." Re: Secret of mana IC thread
"Cease! You are bringing naught but ruin upon yourself and the world!" Thaum calls out to the Archon as he transforms and proclaims his might. The next moment, claws rend Thaum's flesh, sending blood flying as he is thrown off-balance, gritting his teeth. The Archon vile ambition is powerful, but Thaum will not let him have his victory easily. Golden eyes shining, his blood in midair turns into radiant blue as Thaum draws all of what has been spilled, turning it into a healing wave washing over the frontline the healer is finding himself on, standing his ground. All wounds are wiped away, Undine's grace shielding all of them. As long as he stands, none shall fall.
Spoiler: ActionsStandard Mass Cure Moderate Wounds on Jahn, Ken, and Thaum, because Coney and Larimar are too far away from Jahn (all targets must be within 30ft) and are nowhere near as wounded (and not wounded enough to receive THP from overhealing, both 1 point of damage away from the threshold).

Re: Secret of mana IC thread
Ken asks his new attacker "Why? Is the king not doing his job?"
Sadly, it looks like this debate will have to be settled through force of arms ... if not tentacles.
With the archon both posing an immediate threat and not being invisible, Ken's course of action is clear.
OOC: The invisible attacker loses the +2 bonus, but a 28 still hit Ken.
Automatic: Ring of Blades (1d6+9)[14] plus a living creature takes a -4 penalty to Strength for 1 minute; magic, silver, and slashing vs DR

Re: Secret of mana IC thread
Spoiler: OOCAnother mystery strength check: (1d20-2)[9] And a mystery roll. (1d3)[1]
The Archon slips, but only for a moment, still able to hold himself for now. Though both Ken and Larimar give the Archon a heavy bathering, it seems there is still horrible fight inside the Archon. His other arm retreats into himself and out spurts another, chitinous arm, with the whole rest of his body being plated with new chitinous membrane. He seems to scream or to cry.
HkgIufm! ArGhargh! KiNg!
From his eyes, (one of them having become multi-faceted like a fly.) Fly's something towards Larimar and his images.
Spoiler: Attack against LarimarShould have rolled out the images before. Well, I rolled them in the dice roller thread and Larimar get's two images. That means on a 1 the real Larimar is hit. (1d3)[3] If an Image is hit, it disappears, if Larimar is hit make a Will save against 15 or be confused. (You can roll on the how to act, confusion table yourself in the OOC, should you fail the safe… Which I doubt.)
Jahn strides towards Thaum and jabs heavily at the amalgamation that is now the archon.
Spoiler: Jahn attackAttack: (1d20+21)[34]
Damage: (1d8+4)[7], Fire: (3d6)[11], Viscious (2d6)[4], Backlash (1d6)[3], Divine Surge (8d8)[31]
The Archon though has his eyes focused on the healer and unleashes his fury unto him, while trying to keep Ken away from him with his tentacles.
Spoiler: OOC archon status, KenThe blades have worked against the Archon but his newest transformation has given him 4 more points in strength, so it cancels each other out.
Spoiler: Attack against ThaumClaw attack: (1d20+20)[40]

Re: Secret of mana IC thread
The assault Thaum has to withstand is withering, as the archon abandons all pretense of control, turning into a savage abomination in front of them. Even through the pain and physical trauma, the healer keeps track of his companions. Judging Ken to still benefit from what shielding he could bestow, even if it is only a little, Thaum focuses on himself. More attacks will come, there is no time for further fortifications that would be meaningful enough in the short amount of time given his current level of injury. It will have to be a short race, then, to hopefully come out briefly ahead with enough breathing room. Focusing his energies inwards, he wipes away his injuries once more, no doubt infuriating the beast in front of him further.
Spoiler: ActionsNo provoking casting AoOs because of Shielded Casting.
Swift Cast Close Wounds on himself, not applying Healer's Blessing to this particular casting (to avoid Thaum from healing himself to just below max HP and thus above the overhealing threshold).
Heals (1d4+9)[12] HP
Standard Cast Cure Serious Wounds on himself, heals (3d8+34)[44] HP (excess healing becomes THP).
HP tally
Coney 51/59

Ken 57/57 (3 THP)

Re: Secret of mana IC thread
Well this battle was getting weirder and weirder. Or at least, the archon was.
"He's taking on properties from the creatures in the other room. Start expecting acid -"
"Ken, what the hell is attacking you??"
Larimar pulls out a scroll rather rashly and releases its magic, coating the center of the battlefield in golden glitter! The invisible nuisance is revealed, somewhat, or at least its outline is anyway, and the dust gets in everyone's eyes.
Spoiler: oocI've wanted to do this so badly lol
sorry
I'm just going to have Larimar get out his scroll of glitterdust and cast it on the point between Ken and the archon. It might blind Ken, might blind the archon, or even this invisible thing, but no one else at least.
Hey, at least Ken activated a blindfighting stance, right?
some d20 for using my scroll: (1d20)[17]
Oh yay, it worked. I believe it's a DC 13 will save or be blinded.Last edited by WindStruck; 2021-09-16 at 03:07 PM.

Re: Secret of mana IC thread
Coney
Goodness! So now the Archon has transformed three of his body parts. Coney's worried that before the fight was over there would be nothing left of the original were-lion. He would truly be a were-lion, and an ARE-wierdo.
Since Larimar, graciously, had anticipated her next action against the beast, Coney instead rolls back against the wall and sends another intense blast of flame over the Archon's head, engulfing him in the ensuing explosion.
Spoiler: OOCConey centres an empowered fireball in I 19, so as to catch the Archon but neither Jahn nor Ken in its radius. Reflex DC 19 for half on (9d6)[31] x 1.5 = 46 fire damage.
And a 5' step SE.
Also just a reminder that the archon has to keep making reflex saves to avoid falling down.

Re: Secret of mana IC thread
Ken is struck by another tentacle, but resists the paralysis.
He blinks as glitter engulfs him, just in time to keep it out of his eyes. When this is over, I'm going to have to have a talk with Larimar!
However, it does reveal the invisible attacker as a ... strange-looking ... ?
OOC: Knowledge (Arcana) (1d20+16)[25]
Nonetheless, the archon remains a bigger threat, and is the focus of Ken's attacks (unless he drops).
OOC: Swift: Cast Wraithstrike

Re: Secret of mana IC thread
Thanks to the revealing nature of Larimar's placed Glitterdust a weird-stitched together monstrosity is revealed and can be targetted by Coney's fireball. Almost as soon as it's revealed the combined power of the fireball and the slicing of Ken's blades scatter all that makes the thing humanoid and it became a non-thread. The Archon, seemingly still wanting to fight get's hit by two of Ken's slices, slips this time on the grease-laden floor and stays there. He still seems to breathe but there is no fight left in him. It's noticable that his transformations seem to slowly revert and transform him into his were-lion form.
When the door to the creature-menagerie is opened it seems that most of the creatures are weak but aggressive, with the exception of the Gibbering Mouther who helps you subdue these addled occupants. After that he mutters a "TeA! tEEa? T-T-T-E-E-E-A-A-A?" And still makes no aggressive movements, it even doesn't procure the maddening gibbering these creatures are known for. If you open the door to the entrance room, you almost get a face-full of cockatrice but he realizes fast enough that it's you to not attack you with his spur and clucks apologetic.
From the two cabinet's in the archons room one holds a lot of weird material, probably from some plants and creatures some of them having quasi-magical properties.
The other Cabinet (who seems to be smothered by a weird substance perhaps to protect it from something?) Is half-filled with cases. Some of them filled with magical scrolls, but other's are filled with rows upon rows of writing. With just a cursory glance you can see that it's about the archon's Experiments. It seemed to be filed with a certain system that is hard to understand but his projects seem to be undecoded and readable by anyone who invests enough time towards the reading experience.
Spoiler: LOOTMaterials and stuff that are also magic items.
2 Vine Whips (Whips +1)
3 Exploding pumpkins (7d6 fireballs with a Reflex save against 14, can be thrown up to 50 feet), usable by everyone.
1 Golem core (wet) worth 5000 Gold for enchanting or 2500 for selling.
1 Jar of Honey (works like 5 Potions of Cure Serious wounds, healing 3d8+5, but tastier)
1 Scary looking tusk (can be worn as a necklace, for +4 Constitution and +4 saves against fear)
1 thorny, kinda moving on it's own, stick (works as a Club+2 that always deal an additional 1 piercing damage)
2 green glowing moss (can be rubbed on claws and stuff for a Greater magic Fang (+2) effect, for 10 hours)
Magic scrolls.
1 Scroll of Passwall
3 Scrolls of Stone shape
2 Scrolls of Improved Invisibility (for 7 rounds)
1 Scroll of Shillelagh
6 Scrolls of Remove Paralysis
2 Scrolls of Minor creation.
4 Scrolls of Major creation.
1 Scroll of True creation (sealed separately in a golden scrollcase, which gives +2 to UMD device checks towards scrolls)
On the Archon
A tuft of golden hair around 1 finger (functions as a Ring of Protection +3).
Gloves of Dexterity +4, that also give +5 towards the heal skill.
Ring of minor Energy resistance, eletricity (10 Points Electricity resist)

Ken says "Whew!
Larimar, next time you want me to participate in a glitter party, please ask me first.
Do we have a way to secure the Archon?
Given his penchant for transformations and monsterizations, as well as the mouther's unusual behavior, we should consider that these monsters may have once been ordinary beastmen. Thaum, I guess you're the only one who might have a shot at fixing what he did."

Coney
Coney is watching in the second room, trying to make sure that the creatures who have escaped from their tubes remain docile thanks to the work of the cunningly altered mouth-eye-thing.
"For now, we could put him in here, to see if the mouther keeps him calm. I don't think I have anything that will hold him for the long term, especially given his ability to change his bits to other bits."
Regarding the menagerie nervously, she adds.

Re: Secret of mana IC thread
Thaum breathes a sigh of relief as the fight finally ends. There is always this short-lived period of phantom pain caused by wounds healed. First things first. Larimar and Coney have their remaining wounds healed. Then check on the archon, who appears to not be dying, and rather is simply unconscious. He notes the tuft of hair shaped into a ring, and gets the feeling it may or may not hold sentimental value. Though that may be Then the... experiment specimen. The gibbering creature appears non-hostile, the rest also is less aggressive, which may be indication of people having been transformed. There is precedence for this, given their past experiences.
A nod is given back to Ken. "I shall do my very best," Thaum answers. Drawing on his magic, he analyzes the creatures, looking for strong transmutation auras, and if he finds them, he, well, attempts to undo whatever has been done to the gibbering creature.
Spoiler: ActionsDetect Magic on the creatures. Spellcraft check (1d20+10)[26]
Afterwards, break enchantment on the gibbering mouther

Re: Secret of mana IC thread
Spoiler: Detect magicThe creatures are all still slightly magical, because of the rest of the mana from the stasis spell that still lingers on them. Some of them seem to have innate spellcasting abilitys but have no other effects on them with the exception of the Gibbering mouther who seems to have multiple interwoven spells cast upon him, the most prominent seem to be from Luna, The Dryad and Shade. But there are also some remnants of Undine magic still lingering. Though the magical concotion is very complex it also seems very flimsy and easy to disrupt.
When Thaum try's to break the enchantment on the Gibbering mouther at first nothing seems to happen, but then it seems like the Mouther is not moving at all and slowly it seems that it flows away from itself. A small wave of flesh with eyes and mouths is just falling off of the thing, followed by more masses of the stuff, while flowing they transform into different creature parts, a beak, a mass of tentacles, some chitionous hulls, bristelike hair… When the process is over a beast-men lies on the ground, currently sleeping, his muscles seem a bit atrophied and they are noticable bags under his eyes but it doesn't seem like it's anything that can't be cured by some rest, especially if it's aided with some healing magic's.

Re: Secret of mana IC thread
"Hm," is heard from Thaum as he examines the various creatures. "except for this one, none of these creatures possess mana auras suggesting a transformation. They may have been sample donors instead."
Casting the spell, Thaum is proven right to an extent. Moving the unconscious beastman away from the other creatures, he applies some of Undine's magics to see what can or cannot be fixed.
Spoiler: ActionsHealing lorecall is still running, so every healing spell cast on a target also removes one of the following conditions: dazed, dazzled, fatigued, exhausted, nauseated, sickened.
Thaum casts status on the beastman to see what he suffers from. If he is wounded and/or fatigued/exhausted, he casts a cure light wounds to see if he can make headway on that. For the muscle atrophy, he casts a lesser restoration to see if that improves things. Otherwise, he uses his healing hands class feature to attempt to heal ability damage or ability drain.

Re: Secret of mana IC thread
Spoiler: DiagnosisDespite being transformed into Gibbering Mouther there is not much wrong with the beastman, save that he's like you expect someone who was sleeping for an overly long time (atrophied muscles, befuddled, coordination problems). Which is kinda impressive, that transformation should have done more, both physically and mentally. You're spells bring him back into full working order.
After some restoration spells the beastman wakes up. "Wha? Who are you? Where am I?" He's able to stand up, but still seems to be a bit woobly and out of it. Kinda like he slept an overly long time and is now slowly waking up. After he catches himself.

Re: Secret of mana IC thread
"My name is Thaum, and I regret to inform you that you, until moments ago, had been one of the Archon's experiments. How are you feeling? Any aches?"
Should the beastman be fine, given the circumstances, Thaum tells him to take a few moments for himself, followed by the healer searching the laboratory more thoroughly.

Re: Secret of mana IC thread
Meanwhile, Larimar is on guard, still holding a flaming/holy luna charged arrow at the form of the Archon should he make any sudden movements.
Looking over his shoulder briefly he adds, "Yeah, it's kind of screwed up."
He wonders out loud, "So what are we going to do with this guy? We'll be here all day if he keeps regenerating and won't want to listen."Avatar by linklele!

Coney
Coney pauses to consider, examining the Archon's unconscious form.
"None of my magics are likely to restrain him. With work, luck and your weapons pointed at him, I may be able to talk him around to some form of cooperation. At the very least, we need to try to learn whether he has done what he did to this poor fellow to the others in the other room, and whether he has other people transformed, poisoned or otherwise dancing on his strings elsewhere.""We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be." Re: Secret of mana IC thread
The beastman looks around, now really taking everything in, also looking at the unconscious monsters "By Luna's wings. Uh, yes I'm fine, yeah I collect myself." He seems a bit stunned and trying to remember what has happened to him.
Larimar looking at the Archon quickly realizes that he did regenerate at the start of the combat, but it seems he lost (or misplaced?) His regeneration throughout his transformations and probably won't wake up by himself that fast.
Searching through the laboratory there are the items the archon has collected, several scrolls and some folders filled with masses of pergament. Some labelled ominously like: "More than the king." "Project 3." "More than teeth, more than claws." "Freedom from Sprites." They are written in plain common but need some work just ordering them.
There is also still the chest that was found in the beginning, still filled with several potions and bags of coins and gems.

Re: Secret of mana IC thread
Looking at the research parchments, Thaum puts it in his bag for later examination, same with the chest contents.
"Given beastmen adhere to might making right, he has been soundly beaten. Perhaps he is now more open to answering questions, such as what his plan is and whether he is working with someone."

Larimar says, "He did mention serving more than one mistress. I rather hoped there wouldn't be more than one creepy vampire lady covered in black eyeball goo..."

Coney
Coney nodded her ears.
"I think we'd all hope for that. But I thought he was simply referencing a reverence to multiple Spirits.""We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be." Kurt Vonnegut

Re: Secret of mana IC thread
Removing all magic items and weapons from the archon, all there is left to do is to tie him up (to prevent him immediately running or attacking) and wait give him a little bit of healing to wake him back up.

Re: Secret of mana IC thread
Ken casts Detect Magic and examines the loot as well as the monster containers and other apparatus.
He tells the rescued beastman "Hi, I'm Ken. If you remember anything, please tell us, in case the Archon wasn't working alone."
