    Question (Spell) Single-target out-of-combat healing (P.E.A.C.H.)

Wiki-like cross-indexing: This spell synergizes well with this ability.

I need to know if this single-target variation on Prayer of Healing is balanced.

    Prayer for the Hero
    1st-level Evocation
    Casting Time: 10 minutes
    Range: Touch
    Components: V
    Duration: Instantaneous

A creature you touch regains a number of hit points equal to 2d8 + your spellcasting ability modifier. This spell has no effect on undead or constructs.

At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the healing increases by 2d8 for each slot level above 1st.

    .

For easier comparison purposes, here are the dice amounts (using both minimum and a 5th level slot) and links (for the pre-existing ones) for single and multi-target healing spells for various casting times. All of these spells add the casting ability modifier to the baseline healing.
Bonus Action Standard Action 10 Minutes
    1 Target 1st: 1d4, 5th:5d4 1st: 1d8, 5th: 5d8 1st: 2d8, 5th: 10d8
    6 Targets 3rd: 1d4, 5th:3d4 5th: 3d8, (+1:+1d8) 2nd: 2d8 , 5th: 5d8

    Spoiler: Alternative versions
    Show
Considering changing the name. Options include:
    1. Champion's Prayer
    2. Prayer for the Champion
    3. Prayer for the Victorious Hero
    4. Prayer for the Victorious/Defeated Hero (exactly like this, including the slash)
    5. Prayer for the Bold Hero
    6. Prayer at the Close of Battle (Clearer, but maybe less "punchy"?)

Those familiar with my work will know that I often have a "Director's Cut" version that is more complex or breaks the conventions of the system. In this case it would simply be changing the base healing from "2d8 + your spellcasting ability modifier" to "2d8 + your spellcasting ability SCORE".

EDITED Sat. March 7th 2020: Realize that the math could me made to work the same by reducing the level to 1st and making the base healing 2d8 rather than 4d8. Since low-level survivability is a good thing, and being able to fine-tune how much power you need is also good, I went ahead and did that. Also updated the chart and the text of the "Director's Cut" description to reflect this. This does make said Director's Cut more powerful since you are getting more of a multiplier on the bonus healing when you use a 1st level slot. Not sure that it really matters though.

Of course, it should be noted that this is not usually a spell you would almost ever end up casting from your highest available slot before say... 9th class level or so? This is because Prayer of Healing is usually going to be more useful unless the party's Tank is VERY efficient at his job.

I am more inclined towards 2d6 + ability modifier or use a different mechanic altogether, maybe have the target spend hit dice for maximum healing effect. Just my preference though, it prevent it all kinda blending together in a mathematical exercise. your version is unlikely to break the game and might fit your groups play style better.

    Thank you for the help!

Unfortunately, despite having run for about a year, the campaign in question is now on hiatus and may be cancelled.

d6's rather than d8's just to make it distinctive seems a bit silly.

Rolling hitdice would be... kinda cheese in this specific character's case, and, I would hypothesize, a bit of a let-down for more normal character classes if it was "only" maximizing them since you are spending a spell to consume another resource (hit-dice) when ONE of the points of casting healing magic is NOT using up hit-dice. Could still be good, but I just wanted to cover a counter-point!
