While I'm not a fan of romance at all I thought it was Padame and Anakin's actors who were the problem in Episodes 2 and 3 rather then the writing (admittedly, whoever hired them didn't appear to have much of a clue).

There were some pretty atrocious lines. "Your skin is soft, not like sand" was one of them, I'm pretty sure. The balcony bantering in episode 3 had something to the tune of "Your beauty is like the sun" "Well maybe you are blinded by love" or something like that.

I hesitate to blame any actors in that mess, because acting savants, legends, folded before the challenge of acting with a one-take director who didn't direct.

I guess the sand line would make sense based on Anakin's upbringing (I can't remember if he said that, so I'm guessing he did). Which actors were you refering to when you said they folded, Jerthanis?

I got the impression that the cast was actually pretty strong, but the director really didn't bring the magic out of them. From what I remember of the DVD extras, filming looked like a nightmare; most scenes were a couple of lead actors against a green screen an acting with an invisible third would-be-CGI actor. Compared with the behind the scenes of Lord of the Rings; where everyone, cast and crew, seemed to be having a blast as a team; there was a very cold vibe from everyone in the extras on Star Wars.

And the romance dialogue really didn't help.

I forgot about how the new trilogy was filmed. (I can imagine that being off-putting for a lot of scenes). To be honest, my only issue with the acting in those films other then Padame and Anakin, who seemed wooden during non-romance scenes as well, was Euan McGregor giving Obi-Wan an English upper-class accent for some reason (I don't know who thought that would work for the character).

He was trying to be a young Sir Alec Guinness. I can't remember how accurate he was.

I've only seen the prequel trilogy films twice (once in the theatre, once on DVD). I remember liking the scenes with Obi-Wan, but that's probably because his scenes were the ones in-between all the romance gunk. Compared to that, anything would have seemed like gold in comparison.

Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson mainly. They're both phenomenal and brought almost nothing to their individual roles aside from some one-liners in McGregor's case. Natalie Portman was abysmal, but other movies she's been in since have proven that she takes direction well if nothing else. I don't think Samuel L. Jackson is really that great in general, but he was clearly phoning his performance in, appearing in the movie for the chance to be depicted as a badass again. There really is no Mace Windu character, just Samuel L. Jackson with a Lightsaber.

Because I can't name an actor in those movies who did better than passable, I'm willing to give them a blanket benefit of the doubt and blame my emotional disconnect on the dialogue that no one would ever speak. Also, George Lucas has admitted publicly that he rarely does more than one take for any reason, thinking he can fix anything wrong with the shot on the editing floor.

I've had a theory for a while, and a recent viewing of all 6 movies with the commentary track running has reinforced this, that they would be better served by being semi-silent films. Keep all of the sound effects and music, but delete the voice track and only put in minimal subtitles (if any) and see how that turns out.

I'm pretty sure (and I think it was in the mini-documentary on the "special edition original trilogy" VHS version) that Lucas himself has said that the first Star Wars (i.e. Episode IV: A New Hope, for you geeky pedants ) would work as a silent film, and was almost designed that way.
