Now im starting to think this is basically just an official day off from the heterodyne for all his or her people. Even the castle gets the chance to relax its vigilance and do whatever it does to entertain itself. The jaegers and minions get to have a huge honking party, the castle can stop being on guard for the night, it feels like this is how the heterodynes show their appreciation to their people for a year of hard work and loyalty. I certainly understand why this is a secret though, all the towns defenses are at a lower level of readiness and its defenders are getting hammered and partying.

And remember that at least one of the old heterodynes liked to let people invade so he could jump out and yell "SURPRISE!!!" So yeah, it may be both a gift of a night off for everything in mechanicsburg, and a dare to anyone foolish enough to try something so the lord gets to personally smite the fools rather than have his troops and such do it for him.

Just as long as they stomp out of rhythm when crossing any bridges. (And in a place like Mechanicsberg, you can't count out certain sections of road being false covers for pits of various kinds, so be careful there, too.)
