"Good to know. But let's finish up exploring the upper floor before we borrow trouble from the cellar."

Re: IC - [D&D 5E] Candlekeep Mysteries
Patricia agrees with Kynos, stuffing the last bite of her own Elevensies sandwich into her mouth before motioning to the others to head upstairs again. It wouldn't be polite to talk with her mouth full, after all.
She heads upstairs but on a whim, heads left again at the landing. "I'm still curious about the sunburst door, on the wall with those constellations. We should see if there's some way to get it open."
Spoiler: OOCIf I'm judging the map right, it looks like there's a room next to the bedroom, too, of course. And then attic and basement. But Patricia/Mara hates the idea of a puzzle left unsolved, or some fancy wizard thinking they've outsmarted her.

Re: IC - [D&D 5E] Candlekeep Mysteries
Eleazar gives Runa a quick look-over. Since she seems well enough recovered from the lute's trap, he hurries to follow Patricia. "Did anyone try to open the door already? I was distracted with the bones and such in the cabinets in that room. I do recall for sure there wasn't a magic aura on the sunburst door, so at worst it's a mundane lock."

"That's good to know", Kynos replied, "But we still want to be careful - a mundane lock can house a mundane trap. So let's take a really thorough look at it first, befor we try to bypass it."

Re: IC - [D&D 5E] Candlekeep Mysteries
The party returns to the room full of odd specimens at the top left of the stairs. No new threats have appeared, and after a careful search, the door does not appear to be trapped, and from what you can tell, is unlocked. Patricia spends some time looking through the books on the large central table, and does find a couple books on astronomy (its hard not to find numerous books on every subject in this house), and also another large tome baring the face of Mordenkeinen. This large leather tome is identical to the others you have found, but has the letter T on its spine.

Seeing the door is safe, Kynos readied himself to open it while also acknowledging the new book
"Everyone ready for the next room?"
When everyone affirmed, he opened the door.

Re: IC - [D&D 5E] Candlekeep Mysteries
Sir Kynos opens the door to reveal a beautiful night time scene. A grassy knoll lies before you, with endless, if murky and indistinct, plains in each direction, above is a cloudless night time sky with faint stairs visible. Arranged around the top of this grassy scene are five telescopes mounted on brass stands pointed at the constellations above. In the center of the telescopes is a one foot diameter clear crystal ball which also sits on a brass stand.

Re: IC - [D&D 5E] Candlekeep Mysteries
Eleazar starts for one of the telescopes, but seeing that Kynos is already doing the same, he instead searches by naked eye for familiar constellations. Is this place halfway in the real world? Are the stars arranged in their accustomed order?

Re: IC - [D&D 5E] Candlekeep Mysteries
As soon as Sir Kynos and Eleazar enter the room, the illusion partially breaks. While the illusion is still visible, you can clearly see the room is 15 feet by 15 feet, and has the same properties as the rest of the house. Interacting with the telescopes proves them to be real physical objects, and viewing the sky from them gives a superb view of the night sky. This sky mirrors that of the material plane, and features many of the constellations you know from the larger world, including the Five Sisters.

Re: IC - [D&D 5E] Candlekeep Mysteries
Patricia picks up the "T" book and adds it with the others. "So we have 'R' 'E' and 'T,' now. Maybe they're like those fancy encyclopedias and spell something when they're all together. 'Return,' maybe? Or perhaps the insides become visible when you collect them all."
Then she follows Sir Kynos into the night sky room, oooh-ing and aaah-ing. "Very nice, very nice. It seems this Fistandia never had things just be what they... seem..." she finishes sheepishly, realizing the contradiction in the words only after they were committed.
She thinks back and remembers aloud, "I was all caught up in thinking there was a trick to opening this door, when it was unlocked the whole time. But the Five Sisters were the constellations in the other room, and now here are five telescopes. I wonder if the night sky on the wall in there matches the sky here? Worth a check, right?" She grabs a pen and parchment out of her bag and walks back into the previous room. She sketches the location of the constellations on the wall, and then comes back in to see if it looks like the same view, that the stars are in the same places.

"Oh, I don't know. I'd say the cats have been pretty catty." Runa japes with a chuckle, but then gives Patricia a nod indicating she thinks it was a good idea.
Certainly as good idea as any other, not that Runa had even been making an attempt to puzzle it out. As her focus was still mainly on just enjoying the adventure of it all.

Re: IC - [D&D 5E] Candlekeep Mysteries
Eleazar smiles at Runa's joke but doesn't comment on it. Instead, he says, "I'm disappointed and amazed all at once, finding the night sky the same in this non-place as back home. Magic is strange, truly strange. ... Unless the arrangement of the telescopes means something important and arcane, I'd say we're done exploring this floor of the mansion. So what next? Up or down, attic or cellar?" He points as he speaks, not showing any clear sign of a preference.

"Attic first. But something feels off. Maybe it's because of this place being in a pocket dimension, but the upper floor doesn't feel as if it lines up with the ground floor."

Re: IC - [D&D 5E] Candlekeep Mysteries
"First, can we try looking at the Five Sisters through the five telescopes? I think the number may be significant." Patricia sets about looking at a different star with each telescope, trying not to bump them out of position as she goes. "If this doesn't do anything, fine, we can take a look in the attic," she adds to Kynos. "I know it feels like we've missed a spot on each floor still. But then again, magic can be like that."

As Patricia aligns the fifth telescope, you can hear a soft click coming from the wall opposite from the one you entered. Through the illusion, you can see the faint outline of a doorway appear on that far wall.

Re: IC - [D&D 5E] Candlekeep Mysteries
Dragonborn don't usually deign to make a "squeee!" sound but Patricia does something close. It's actually a little bit terrifying. She tries to act modest about the doorway but kinda fails. "Fistandia was a tricksy old flumph, wasn't she!" She cackles a little and eagerly follows the others through the new doorway.

Re: IC - [D&D 5E] Candlekeep Mysteries
Sir Kynos enters a room that is filled with dust and cobwebs, the walls bear none of the fine touches that the rest of the house does, just bare stone. Two pieces of furniture sit in the room, a bench, and a large three section bookcase. The bookcase, features numerous books, all connected by metal coverings and chains which bind them to the bookcase. At the bottom of the bookcase, in front of the bench is a reading table, upon which sits a leather bound book featuring the face of Mordenkainen.

He started by poking stand and bench, before doing the same to the iron clad books.

Patricia also looks for a letter and does the little Detect Magic ritual that the others have become familiar with. She looks at the Mordenkainen book in particular as well. “Nice ‘stache,” she says to the book, under her breath.

Patricia begins her ritual for detect magic, during which, both she and Sir Kynos notices the letter L on the spine of the book that sits on the reading ledge in front of the chained books. At the end of the ritual, Patricia detects strong transmutation magic coming from the bookcase.
