Dark heresy 2 - assassin strike question
Hi,
After a _long_ break we have started playing DH2. I am playing a melee Adepta Sororita there and hopefully someone is still around to answer a question. Unfortunately the FFG boards are gone so I'm trying here:
Can one combine the effect of "whirlwind of death" talent with "assassin strike"? Meaning one can start out by striking at least 1 enemy, make the free move and contine striking one or more within half a move (after stopping the move completely)
For the record, the errata states that "assassin strike" IS possible to combine with "counter attack"
assassin strike
Tier: 3
Prerequisites: Acrobatics, Agility 40
Aptitudes: Weapon Skill, Fieldcraft
The character’s natural agility and graceful martial form turn him into a dervish of death in combat. After making a melee attack, a successful Challenging (+0) Acrobatics skill test allows the Acolyte to move at half rate as a Free Action. He may only make this move once per round, and the character’s opponent does not receive a free attack resulting from his move
WhirlWind of death
Tier: 2
Prerequisite: Weapon Skill 40
Aptitudes: Weapon Skill, Finesse
When facing massed opponents in close quarters, the Acolyte becomes a streak of blows, moving, hacking, gutting, and beheading his enemies with ceaseless fury. As a Half ction, the character may make one Standard Attack action (see page 224) with a melee weapon against a foe, plus one additional Standard Attack action with the same weapon targeting each other foe also engaged in melee combat with the character beyond the first (to a maximum number of attacks up to his Weapon Skill bonus)
Counter attack
Tier: 2
Prerequisite: Weapon Skill 40
Aptitudes: Weapon Skill, Defence
The Acolyte’s lightning ripostes are things of deadly beauty; swift and invisible as the wind. Once per turn, after successfully Parrying an opponent’s attack, this character may immediately make a Standard Attack action as a Free Action against that opponent using the weapon with which he Parried. The character suffers a –20 penalty on the Weapon Skill test for this attack.

Re: Dark heresy 2 - assassin strike question
Doesn't look like it. Assassin strike says nothing about attacking after moving, only moving after attacking. You could Whirlwind Attack, hit everything, then Assassin Strike out of melee, but it wouldn't let you whirlwind-move-continue attacking.
The clause with Counter-Attack is the same - after making a (counter) attack, you can get your free move.Last edited by The Glyphstone; 2021-04-25 at 10:34 AM.

Re: Dark heresy 2 - assassin strike question
Thank you for the reply.
While that indeed would not be an unreasonable interpretation and it probably will end up with this.
Yet I'd say that Assassin strike spesifically says "After making a melee attack" without specifying any other condition to trigger.Since Whirlwind is a sequence of separate "Standard attacks" (normally a single attack action towards one target, it would also not be unresonable to be allowed to make the move after any of them.
I suppose the main question here is if one is allowed in "insert" a Free action into the middle of a Half Action happening. One could of course make this argument that during the sequence of standard attacks, it would also not be unreasonable to make a "leap up" free action, changing your weapon(s) with quickdraw free action or screaming out some words as a free action in between some of the standard attacks.

Re: Dark heresy 2 - assassin strike question
Your GM can rule otherwise, but as the rules are written, no. A Whirlwind Attack is not a series of Half Actions, it is a single Half Action that causes multiple attacks, so there is no 'in the middle' to take that Free Action. Your example is not interrupting an action, but taking Free Actions (leap up, yell, quick draw) before/after the regular action of attacking.
Even you could use the leap mid-Whirlwind/post-Whirlwind, any additional enemies who enter your melee reach were not in reach when you took the Whirlwind Attack action, so they wouldn't have been eligible targets.NOW COMPLETE: Let's Play Starcraft II Trilogy:

Re: Dark heresy 2 - assassin strike question
I'd say you could use Assassin's Strike after any of the Whirlwind Attack attacks, but by using Assassin's Strike, you are no longer carrying out the action that allows you to make the additional attacks.
If you're doing Assassin Strike, you have stopped doing Whirlwind Attack, you are now making a move at a half-move speed, not making an attack.Last edited by Sinewmire; 2021-05-15 at 03:38 PM.
