"You want to burn things?" Anri asked the enemy as firebolts thudded into her. Pain, hot and still unfamiliar, bloomed where she'd been burnt. With a click of her tongue, the heavy blade of the axe ignited. "Let's do that, then."

'Take them alive!' Lizard called to her.

Anri, still smouldering slightly from the enemy firebolts, looking down at her heavy axe and frowned, then looked back up at the flying reptile man. She considered it, and shrugged lightly.

Wading forward, she swung her axe with brutal efficiency, taking off the kobold's ankles and briefly pressing the flaming blade against the wounds to sear them shut - or at least, enough the kob wouldn't immediately bleed to death. Her duty done, she turned her eyes on the next in line.

Her weapon rose and fell, bolstered by magics, as she happily turned kobolds into chunkbolds.

Grok's hasted slashes cut down the elite guard in front of him and he moves on from the kobold, following Grepha's iced-form as the opening for the guards and Gil is opened. Senna follows behind Grok, throwing a quick healing word to staunch an injury of the wearied soldier you rescued, while simultnaeously unleashing a burst of holy fire at the next nearest target. The kobold screeches in pain and, seeing Grepha approach, tosses a wave of lantern oil over Grepha and Grok. The flaming liquid does nothing to the imp, and the dwarf is able to evade most of it, though some of the viscous fire still sticks to him.

To the north, Sam and Caelyn unleash waves of magic against the kobolds that have moved in. Both of the nearest fighters fail to dodge away from Caelyn's flames, though their flailing does inadvertetly let them dodge away from Bokono's fire seed, but they remain standing even after Sam blasts one towards the ground. Anri puts that to bed quickly, cleaving through three of them in quick succession. It seems like they're about to break morale, but a quick barked order and a thrown flask from the alchemist get them to hold strong. The flask bursts between Caelyn and Anri, spewing a noxious poison everywhere, and the two elf-bloods struggle to get away even with Deneir's blessing. Though it leaves them unwounded, they can feel their skin sickening merely at the touch of it.

The alchemist follows up with a poison dart, though it narrowly misses, and Anri is forced to throw up another Shield of magic to evade the elite guard's warpick from landing into her shoulder.

Sam and Caelyn together damage their respective targets (saves: failed) but narrowly don't finish them off.
    Bokono's fire seed unfortunately misses.
Anri's action surge cleaves through three kobolds total.

Senna healing words one of the guards and moves in behind Grok. She casts Sacred Flame on the nearest elite guard, who fails their save and takes 10 radiant damage.

The elite guard tosses lantern oil over Grepha (no damage, immune to fire) and Grok (successful save - 6 fire damage post-save). They then disengage and move away.

The bandoleer wielder tosses a flask between Anri and Caelyn causing a poison could. They both fail their dex saves and each take 19 poison damage. They additionally are poisoned for 1 minute. Can make new con saves at the end of each turn (DC14) to end poisoned early. Bless unfortunately didn't help with the initial save. They then try to shoot at Anri with a dart, but miss.
The cloud lingers. Entering or ending your turn in it deals 1d6 poison damage.

The Elite Guard moves in and attacks. Anri is forced to Shield to avoid damage.

The Tabaxi-loosed arrow streams through the poison cloud towards its creator, striking him hard in the shoulder and for a moment sending him to the ground in pain, the agonised screams echoing through the cistern. Huffing, the king leaps from the platform and stomps over to the flask master, grabbing one of the liquid vials from the bandoleer and forcing it down the kobold's throat while dragging him to his feet. He points a talon at the flying Sam, and the spellcasters respond to his command, launching firebolts up towards the half-dragon. Two go wide, while the others sear against his scales.

As the others shuffle about, one of the spear wielders manages to climb up behind Caelyn, and thrusts his weapon at her, but even poisoned the nimble elf is able to dodge away from it. Grepha is less lucky though, as two of the spear wielders throw their weapons at her, clipping at her icy armour. Buoyed by the success of their strikes, they run to find more weapons to throw.

A spearwielder attacks Caelyn, and misses.
Two spear wielders throw their weapons at Grepha and hit for 5 and 3 (non-magical) piercing damage, before retreating to get more weapons.

The kobold king moves up, grabs one of the potions from the alchemist and feeds it to him, healing him 6 hit points. They are nevertheless bloodied. He wasn't actually knocked down/prone, that was just fun narration.

Coughing, gagging, and stumbling, Caelyn retreats a step through the fog of poisonous vapors, keeping mindful of the sharp spear menacing her from the errant kobold at her back. Feeling woozy and unable to see straight, she knew the best tactic wasn't a haphazard spray of flaming rays. Instead, she attempted a new tactic, her hair raising in a strong, warm wind and luminous drops of glowing cinders raining down from the sky over the kobold at her side. Two flaming spheres crash into Sam, leaving smoking trails up from his armor. But the flames don't seem to bother the dragonborn's brass scales all that much. The flask of flaming oil likewise washes over Grepha's frosty armor like water off a duck's back, trails of flame trickling down onto the soggy boards with her avian face displaying no care.

With Gil no longer pinned down, Grepha turns her attention to where Caelyn is enveloped in poison, and glides to the druid's aid. Soaring through the poison cloud, she descends upon the kobold in a cloak of green flame. She is not gentle with him; there would be targets for capture in less annoying positions.

Flying back down towards the fleeing captives while strafing off a series of magical blasts, Sam calls out in support, "Keep strong, Cae!" Magic carries on his words and flows into her lungs like a breath of fresh air, carrying out some of the inhaled poison.

Alighting on the stonework, Sam warns the Flame guards, "Don't wander too far alone - there's wererats in the sewers and we haven't got them all yet. Just take cover out of the line of fire and we'll then escort you out, kay?"

Grok launches himself through the water with surprising speed, catching the elite guard off...well, guard. Though he was attempting a retreat, it seems such a movement was short-lived, as the glaive lashes out. The first knocks aside his weapon, the second skewers him through the neck. The creature is lifted along with the polearm, before being flung - discarded - into the sewer water. Sam's beams stream over his head, one of them impacting the kobold's shield, but the force knocks it aside, leaving him open to a chest-blast that he survives, albeit barely.

The flung-flame from Bokono streams over Caelyn and strikes the kobold in the shoulder, though likewise, they remain standing. Even enflamed by Bokono, they still get their shield back up in time to block Grepha's flaming strike.

Coughing from the fumes Anri emerges out of the cloud and drops into the water. She swings her greataxe at the legs of the elite, cutting twice and very nearly removing a foot, but they barely stay standing. Seeing Anri in trouble, Senna conjures a healing word and leaps into the water, dashing towards her with an intent of curing the poison. The still-standing Kobold Elite swings his pick at Anri, who evades, but it leaves her open to a double-barrage of blowdarts from the alchemist. She flings up her shield, but with the inspiring command of the Kobold King the blowdarts pierce past it, both striking her and she feels both metal and venom in the wound.

Grok hits twice, and in the process kills the elite guard.
Sam misses with one shot, hits with the second.
    Grepha misses their peck.
Caelyn didn't roll her end-of-turn save vs. Poisoned, so I did it instead. Got a 12 (including bless), which unfortunately fails. No additional damage, but Poisoned condition remains.
Anri, despite Poisoned, hits twice, though the elite guard survives at 1hp. She rolls 11 (including bless) on the anti-Poisoned save, so she remains Poisoned.

Senna Healing Word's Anri for 6 healing. She then hops in the water and Dashes towards Anri, with the intent of curing poison (if she can get there in time).

The alchemist fires two darts at Anri, hitting for 5 piercing and 6 poison, and 5 piercing and 5 poison, for a total of 21 damage. They then move away and drop prone behind some crates.
The Elite Guard attacks Anri with their pick, misses, and disengages away.

The spellcasters and spear throwers continue their ranged assault against the party. Seeing Sam 'retreat', the firebolt-flingers instead target the water-bound Senna. Three of the bursts of flames plop into the water with foul-smelling sizzles, but one of them catches her on the arm. She quickly douses the offending flame in the water, and her spell is uninterrupted. The spearmen throw another pair of projectiles at Grok, and one of them manages to catch him as they retreat to claim more.

To the north, Caelyn's moonbeam scorches her enemy, but he quickly ducks away from the radiant light and circles around her, stabbing at her back. The elf is too fast though, and the spear finds only empty air.

Leaf's arrow strikes the red-scaled kobold, but though it does damage it does not seem to deter the kobold leader. He tugs it from his scales and downs a potion, smirking as the wound heals over at incredible speed. A pair of spear wielders take up position behind him and raise their weapons, ready to throw. The leader raises his voice, magical enhancements allowing it to echo throughout the cavern. This time, he speaks in Common, albeit slightly stilted. "Kurtulmak respects strength and cunning. If you leave now, the great ones here will not follow."

The speed of which you killed his kobolds so far has shaken him slightly, though it seems the offer to go separate ways is more born out of wanting to safeguard the remainder rather than believing he will lose - the clutched weapons indicate they will still fight to the death instead of surrender.

Heedless of Senna's movements, Anri moves in to take the head of the king, but poisoned as she is, her axe swings are parried and deflect by the king, made even slower by the two spears thrown her way. One scrapes against her armour, though the other one goes wide. The nimble kobold targeted by Sam leaps away from his first beam, but the half-dragon predicts this move, and nails it with the second, sending the creature tumbling to the ground in a pile, while Grepha delivers death with her beak to the spear-wielder menacing Caelyn still. Bokono and Caelyn shift their attention southward, though by now the kobolds seem more prepared for ranged assaults and Bokono's fireseed is defleted.

Grok cuts a dwarf-shaped path through the water and climbs up to the platform, his glaive lashing out at the two spear-wielders in wide swings. One goes down immediately, their head removed in a shower of blood, while the other barely gets their shield up to avoid also being beheaded. The force of the blow still knocks the wind from them and they stumble back. Senna brings up the rear, incanting a mass healing spell for the party to help mend their wounds as best she can. She calls forth a follow up blast of flame, but to no avail.

The alchemist springs back, blowing two more darts at Grok that seem to find gaps in his armour and leave venom-stricken needles piercing through. The remaining elite guard washes another batch of scorching lantern oil over the dwarf, though this time he seems more prepared and dodges away from most of it.

Anri moves in to the king, but misses twice. She does make her save vs. poisoned though, ending the effect on her. One of the thrown spears misses, but the other hits (unless she shields) for 6 piercing damage.
Sam misses the first, hits with the second, killing the kobold. Grepha kills the kobold menacing Caelyn.
Caelyn moves the moonbeam, Bokono misses.
Senna moves in to chase after Anri and casts Mass Healing Word with her final third level spell slot. Everyone except Bokono is healed 6 hit points. She also casts Sacred Flame, but the dex save is made.
Grok moves in and kills one kobold, then injures another with the second strike.

The alchemist launches two more darts at Grok before retreating. They hit (21 and 25 for final results) for 6 piercing and 4 poison, and 7 piercing and 6 poison, for a total of 23, before any reductions.
The elite guard also looses another wash of lantern oil at Grok, who makes his save, so only takes 6 fire damage, before reductions.

After a number of arrows from Leaf, the latest one very nearly misses the King, but they're a moment too late to evade it and it takes a chunk of scales from their skin. They hiss in response, and a wave of firebolts flies towards Caelyn. She dodges away from those she can, but in the face of such a wave of fire she can only do so much, and pockmarks of scorch and ash are the result on her body. The resonant pain causes her to flinch, and the radiant light above the king fades before it can truly damage him.

No longer fearing the sky above, the king lashes out at Anri with his shortsword. The elf very narrowly avoids the first strike, but the second catches her, and just as with the poison darts, she feels a searing in her blood from the blade's latent poison. The adjacent spearman follows through, catching the elf off guard with a critical strike that pierces into her leg. The other remaining spear wielder leaps forward to stab at Grok, but his faith is a stalwart protector this time, and the piercing point skitters against the oath-powered magic, preventing any damage.

    Spoiler: Map
    Show

Leaf hits (barely) though due to the potion the king was at full health, so 22 damage instead of 29.

The spellcasters launch of volley at Caelyn. Two miss, three hit, for 4, 2 and 4 fire damage. She loses concentration on moonbeam before the king can be hit by it.
The king and a spearman attack Anri. The king misses once and hits once for 8 slashing and 7 (post-save) poison damage.
The spearman crits Anri for 16. If I've done the maths right Anri is now on 7 hit points remaining.

The other remaining spearman attacks Grok, but his Shield of Faith saves him from the hit.

Suffering a volley of flaming bolts, Caelyn can't help but wonder if this is what her enemies feel like when she unleashes her fury on them. But she doesn't have time to linger. Drawing upon her most powerful spell, she summons four swirling arms of water, which reach out to her wounded allies and soothe their wounds painfully (though possibly with some nasty side effects, considering the source of the water). While those arms gush towards herself and her allies, she fires an intense ball of flickering flame at the kobold king, attempting to put him down.

Anri doesn't back down despite her injuries and swings twice more. The first goes wide, but the second catches her red-scaled foe with a fiery cut. The king ducks, raising up his spiked shield which launches a volley of poisoned stakes at Anri, catching her off guard with yet more venomous pain. Fire is added to fire with Caelyn's invocation, though perhaps the more notable aspect is the healing magic that gets spread around, allowing the elf to remain on her feet. Sam's blast soars past, striking one of the spellcasters, though not enough to do lethal damage.

Grok vanishes past most of the collected kobolds, but one manages to lash out with a dagger and nick him from behind. His first slash baits the alchemist into ducking the wrong way. The kobold practically leaps onto the radiant blade, being pierced straight through the chest and spine, leaving a trail of bloody and viscera along the blade and staff's length. Senna, unwilling to be overtaken, launches a volley of magical bolts at the nearest kobold menacing Anri and executes him in a similarly fast manner.

The final remaining elite guard moves back into the fray with mining pick in hand, but despite his King's encouragement, Anri is able to evade the deadly swing.

Caelyn severely injures the king and throws out a heal (Anri: 11)
Sam misses one, hits once, and heals Caelyn.
Grepha throws out a heal. (Anri: 19)

The remaining kobolds, seeing their king and alchemist, break. With screams and squeals and squeaks they split and break in all directions, ducking and weaving, bobbing. The party (mostly) looks to stop their flight, cutting down most of the retreating kobolds, though a pair still live to flee another day, vanishing into the dim sewer tunnels before you can chase them down or finish the job.

The cistern falls quiet, and you're left with a pile of bodies - mostly kobolds, and some of the sacrificed Flaming Fist. Gil is the first to speak up of his few remaining comrades. His expression and tone are a mixture of wonder and confusion. "What are you doing down here?" Freed from the hectic winds of battle you get a chance to take a better look at the man. He's still a bit on the scrawny side, still got greasy hair, still bearing all the signs of youth, but he's bulked up slightly in the months you've been separated, and there's a little more surety in his stance, though it might just be a trick of the armour and weapons he and the rest of the other remaining Fist soldiers are carrying.

Senna answers first, clambering out of the sewer water and taking a moment to magic herself clean. "Saving you, apparently."

"But...no one knew we were in trouble." He seems legitimately baffled by this, and looks to the rest of you for answers.

The cistern centre platform bears not just the bodies of those whose lives were ritualised and those who carried out the ritual, but also the kobold clan's hoard. Whether a result of their sick rituals or just thievery, they seem to have accumulated quite the treasure trove, including some magical items, which Senna (once she's dried) sets about working out. The majority of their equipment seems beyond usability, and is unlikely to be worth stripping and carrying back to the surface.

    Spoiler: Items
    Show

From their hoard, you receive the following items:-
    Boots of the Winterland
    Shortsword +1

From the bodies, the items of note are the following:-
    Crown of the Kobold King
Wondrous Item (Crown), Rare (requires attunement)
This ancient burnished bronze heirloom has passed from king to king for centuries. Rumors abound of secret blood rites that grant the wearer additional abilities, but even without this ceremony the crown invests its wearer with power.
While attuned to this crown you gain the following benefits:-
    • +2 Charisma (to a maximum of 20)
    • Immunity to the Frightful Presence feature of dragon-type creatures
    • A sorcerer can spend one Sorcery Point to upcast a spell they cast by 1 spell level.

    Poison Spiked Shield
    Shield (nonmagical)
When a melee attack hits you, you can use your reaction to loose a volley of poisoned stakes at the attacker. They take 1d6 piercing and 1d6 poison damage. This spiked shield has four uses remaining of a maximum of five. Refilling its uses can be done in any major city at a cost of 25gp per use for materials, and potentially at a higher cost (or not at all) in smaller towns/villages.

In addition, you receive 5310gp in the form of coinage, art objects, and precious gemstones.

    The Sewers

Squashing down a perverse sense of satisfaction at the ritual site desecrated by its own followers, Sam takes a deep breath and focuses on the positive. No one else will be sacrificed here. Particularly not if they destroy this altar.

Gil's voice gives him something else to focus on, and Sam turns to smile at the boy - now, perhaps, better called a young man. "Well, we heard rumors of folks going missing around the sewer entrances. And Grepha's been searching for you almost nonstop since we arrived." The magic-cloaked raven lands on a board-path nearby and shuffles a bit, feeling called out.

"We have something to return that belongs to you," she states, solemnly. Smile chased away by the tone, Sam nods and walks over to Gil, withdrawing the cloth bundle containing Waukeen's symbols. "It was as you feared, but we put them to rest."

"Sorry," Sam says, holding out the bundle to Gil.

"It seems I was searching the wrong places regardless. You've done well to elevate yourself above the refugee camps," Grepha observes, looking up at Gil's Fist uniform.

After the exchange with Gil comes to a close, Sam gathers the kobold he'd knocked out and any others that had survived their injuries, sitting them up against the structure of the podium with their arms and legs tied. He's not sure yet what Grepha wants to ask them, but he wants to question them a bit himself too.

As the kobolds break and run, the charred dwarf quickly stabs one of the retreating buggers, but he doesn't attempt to hunt them down, knowing that he wouldn't be able to catch them. After verifying that they weren't going to be heading back, he wanders back along the bridges, and rejoins the main group of the party, to discuss. He doesn't seem to care about the small, or the charred state of his armor. When he speaks, he addresses the young guardsman. "Foul things, Kobolds." He shakes his head, and spits, derisively, into the water. "I hope your dead can rest easier, now that this lot have paid the price for their crimes."

He looks towards the altar. "We'd best do something about this foul altar as well."

Leaf shoots at the kobolds as they flee, hoping to make sure none survive to seek their revenge later, but he fails to get the last two, who dart around the corner just before he can shoot another volley.

In the now silent chamber, he helps the others sort through the kobold's horde. He looks for anything interesting, preferring jewelry or statuettes over gems, and gems over coins, unless there is an interesting coin or two.

He also gathers his spent arrows, replacing the ones that still look usable and holding out any broken ones for the others to see.

    "Can anyone mend these?"

"I'll have to toss a few extra coins to Tymora after this." Gil looks out over the cistern, and his comrade's sacrificed bodies - throats slits, chests carved open and emptied. "They weren't so lucky though." He sighs. "We were told it'd be an easy mission - a few slimes, a small group of kobolds. Something for the new trainees to cut their teeth on while they learned. Not...this."

He takes the offered pendants, and for a moment it looks like he might toss them into the water. He holds them out, his hand hovering over the gently flowing cistern, but he thinks better of it, and instead drops them into a pouch at his waist. "Thank you." It's a simple response, but it seems anything further is beyond him at this time. "We need to report back and get some people down to recover our bodies. This isn't a great place to chat but...are you staying down here?"

In response to Senna's suggestion of destroying the altar, Senna grabs up one of the discarded mining picks and tosses it to Grok. "Nice of them to provide the tool for it."

Caelyn looked to Leaf's broken arrows and shakes her head. "I possess no magic that can fix those, but given materials I can craft more." She looked to the hoard of coins and gems assembled by the kobolds, moving over to it and beginning to count and shuffle them into their own bag of holding. "I daresay that though spendthrift is wise, we should be able to afford you a fresh quiver... several thousand times over." When she finished the labor she turned to Grok. "IF you need some immolation to aid your demolition let me know. I have no love of the shrines of bloodthirsty gods as well."

But it was Sam who caught her attention while she was counting. Her brother, so warm hearted and kind that at times it frustrated her to no end, who pursued Gil across the lands, into the depths of sewers, and beyond what even the most valorous knights would consider reasonable, and by the gods he DID it. Saved him. Returned his parents necklaces. Told the greasy haired boy he had done well for himself, even. It was... inspiring, in it's own way, but it prompted self reflection that left her feeling... wanting. Since Seniyad had blessed her staff with magic to ease her sleeping mind she found less reason to torture herself with self doubt and danger, but she would never have pushed this far to aid someone she barely knew without her brother.

She hoped her family would remain together. They were stronger together. Better together. Like arrows, one could snap under pressure, but a bundle could sustain even the strongest of grips. She didn't want to be a lone arrow, and she feared for those who had left before her.

    The Sewers

Looking over his shoulder at Gil, Sam smiles. Not a happy smile, but a somber and supportive one. "I need to question some of these kobolds, about some other things we found in the sewers among the wererats. And maybe other dangers that might be down here. We might see you at the barracks sometime."

"If you do not intend to wait for us, take care on the path out," Grepha cautions the boy and his surviving comrades. "There are still surviving rats down here, though wounded and scattered."

"Maybe some of us could go up with them?" Sam suggests. With a playful look he asks, "Senna, I know it's great down here in the stinking bowels of the city, but maybe you'd want to escort them back to the barracks?"

Grok catches the proffered pick in one hand, before sliding his glaive into it's sheath, swinging it around, and bringing it slamming down into the altar with all the skill a dwarf could bring to bear as he got to work reducing the foul thing to rubble.
