Have we already supported the merchant's claim to the inn, or are we still waiting around for the guards to show up?

Yes you have supported the merchants claim to the Inn and the guards did show up. There was some discussion on the matter but the merchant did have the paperwork (any claims of forgery are hotly denied) and some of the guards money bags look decidedly heavier than when they arrived so all is good. The next mission will be actually supplied to you by the merchant so as soon as the magic distribution is solved, we will proceed.
Oh and you can all think about level up choices because the Inn encounter gives you one. (yes, Im pushing level advancement way beyond what is normal for my games)

I'm not gonna complain! And Torta's up to date.

(Meanwhile: shall I take it that her Detect Spirits and Spot didn't pick up anything about the shield?)

Urag is leveled up already! He got now 108 HP!

He will hand the +2 Amulet of Constitution to Garret.

What books were available to level up?
Thinking about going Knight of the Raven, it feels thematically correct.

And can I prepare ranger spells from Dragon Magic, Races of the Dragon and the Spell Compendium?

Just checked (because I really wanted Spirit Sense for Torta (but alas)); PHB, PHB2, all Completes (except CP) and the Spell Compendium are our pre-cleared sourcebooks.

Knight would make sense, not the most powerful class, but fits the theme... could William anoint Garreth as Knight of Klintina?

I'm VERY fond of Knight (as you probably figured), but I can't recommend it in such a context. It can be made cool, but its good stuff I love only starts coming online at 3rd level with Bulwark of Defense and with what comes after (Test of the Mettle, Vigilant Defender, Shield Ally…).

Well folks, once again my cancer issues have forced me into the hospital. Rather than continue this roller coaster of in and out, I am just going to do the Endgame of this campaign.
The next mission for the group would come from Wilson, who had a sheath of papers to deliver to the next few Inns along the trail. Basically, he was proposing an alliance of all the Inns to slowly encircle Lord Mouton economically and force him out of office, or at least show people they can fight back. Halfway through this mission, the party encounters some hill giants who were making a meal out of their latest ambush victims. The party entered battle and defeated the giants and entered battle with them, winning. The group discovered a set of leather armor, which promptly resized itself to fit Garrett.
When Garret puts the armor on, many questions are answered. Many subtle changes occur and he becomes more regal in appearance. Its obvious that he is longer Garrett, the humble ranger but rather the first born son of the former king, Prince Zolan.
When it became clear that Mouton would win this fight, the decision was made to preserve the line of kingship. Zolan' (s memories were taken from him and placed into the items, as he recovered each one, little bits and pieces would flash in (those half memories he got each time) and he was sent out via secret passages.
Apart from the royal family, the only person who knew of the deception was William. He was charged with watching over him, from afar at first and then by joining his growing group but he could not reveal whole story, until now.
With the new power the group has (this is the sort of revelation that gives 2 levels, and the items work together to become even better. Plus, when the group sneaks back into the palace to confront him, it is discovered that Mouton himself is actually a hill giant, but against Zolan (the rest of the group takes care of other minions in the final confrontation), he stands tall and ends the reign of Mouton

Can confirm, I (William) knew about it all along!

My family has history and current activity around cancer. You are in our thoughts, sincerely.

I want to thank Mikela (especially) and the rest of you for my introduction to pbp. This has been really fun and now I can't get enough of it.

My best wishes for recovery, Mikela. Thanks for DMining to us and I'm really glad I've played Urag: it was a fun character and the story was nice.

And thanks all the other players for tagging along and I really hope you enjoyed the gross barbarian with a lion's heart.

Very true! (And Starbuck: let me tell you that Sonamy's bad jokes were likewise appreciated.)

Man, that sucks about the cancer, hope you feel better. You'll be in my prayers.

    This was a fun game.

Metastachydium: I bring the jokes, so you can bring the laughs.
