    Lizardfolk Village

The ritual casting of both spells goes off without a hitch. Hylusi finds herself able to translate, while Bil becomes capable of identifying subterfuge. John does not spot any signs of major trade, but this village is so small it may run on a barter system.

Another throaty roar goes up in the murk, joined by other lizard folk's voices in a chorus. Hylusi now understands the song. "All clear, all safe, praise the great healer, Zanasuresh!" As this cry is taken up by various folk around the swampy village, singing "Praise the great healer, Zanasuresh!", Hylusi realizes that it is not just a song, but a sentry's call. These people are on alert to danger.

    Savtua Swamp Village

The reaction is slow, by comparison to most humanoids. First the head raises, followed by the tongue extending, and only then does the lizard folk turn to face Hylusi and the rest of the party. One of the smaller of the species, they still crest six feet.

"You will follow. We will heal. Perhaps trade. Then you will walk away on your special path. These are the ways of Zanasuresh."
Without waiting for a reply, the lizard folk turns and leads you all onward towards the center of the village. All the folk around the swampy village center turn to look at you all, then resolutely go back to their tasks, whispering to Zanasuresh in hushed voices. The folk you first met leads you to the largest building out on the water, where two massive specimens stand guard.

Their frills do not rise when you come, and they do not appear agitated, but still they converse in stern terms with your guide before pulling open the door to the hut and admitting you. Inside, you find a room with hanging herbs and grasses that smells of spice and fresh water. A hole in the center of the floor leads directly into the clear, cool waters of the swamp below. Squatting on the other side of the hole is a withered and aged looking folk carrying a staff, which he is currently using to fish. He doesn't look up when you arrive, but as your guide explains the situation the old healer glances up at Doredan.

"Uh... should I... get in?" Whispers Jason, wary around these people he has never met before.

Stepping cautiously along behind the seemingly friendly lizardfolk, Doredan keeps his hands away from his weapons out of respect - though he remains tense. "They do not seem dangerous," he mutters to Bil.

At the heart of the village, near the healing pool, Doredan nods his head respectfully at the apparent elder, fishing nearby. "You speak many tongues. I thank you for your information," still looking apprehensive, he asks, "What is the Maze of Mists? And - do you know of a group of criminals hiding in Savtua?"

Finally, as the party members who have need are mending themselves, he offers, "You have given us aid. Are you in need of aid against the demonic creatures infesting this place?"

Translating as she went, the Magus couldn't help a thin smile at Bil's comment.

Her next mind-whisper was for the party alone and not their scale-clad hosts, a sibilant thrum of amusement in it like a needle.
<Why, that should be obvious, ser rabbit - it's harder for the prey to escape when it's been kind enough to step between the jaws, don't you think? Savtua Swamp

Jason lowers himself into the pool of clean water, and the leader of the folk raises their voice in a loud, echoing chant. Soon it is joined by the other members of the village, and then the pool begins to glow. The wounded warrior exclaims in surprise, then groans in relief as a thick layer of shed skin forms over his body, healing his wounds steadily as he slowly recovers. The elder, no longer needed to keep up the village's chant, speaks to Doredan.

She is not the first to lose herself in the hunt for foolish treasure in the emptiness, Zanasuresh. There are faces, places, shadows of the past and future in the mist, but trying to read them is like trying to capture a reflection in the water with your fingers, Zanasuresh...

Direction loses all meaning when one passes into the Maze, but if you seek the treasure of the mists, know we will reward you if you can find the source that agitates the demons and end it, Zanasuresh. My warriors can handle the odd demon, but they seem to come in waves, and work together like warriors instead of mindless monsters. Please, if you follow her footsteps, you are bound in that direction anyway. Please, help our village, Zanasuresh..."

Though grateful for their wounded to be treated by the mending pool, the prince does not venture into it himself for the scarce scratches he suffered. He would sooner avoid scrubbing scales from his skin, the thought alone making him shudder. Turning to the village elder, Doredan nods his head in understanding as the gears in his head turn, piecing together each fragment of information. "The only thing I know of that has changed in this place is the pirates. If this place conjures thoughts and memories," he looks out into the misty 'eastern' yonder. "Well, a fiend-led pirate crew sounds to me like a bad influence. I aim to end them - should that end your demon problem with it, all the happier shall we be."

While not able to project his thoughts into the minds of his companions, Bil hopes his exaggerated eyeroll communicates his feelings on Hylusi's deep paranoia. He's hardly an incautious fellow, but nothing of this villages speaks danger to him.

Instead, he quotes the holy scripture: "We are here to help each other get through this thing, whatever it is.”

Once someone translates he chieftain's words, Bil's leporine nose twitches at an impressive rate.

"I pray to Damh for an enhancement to my sight, which would make the invisible visible, but that would not reveal the merely obscured. We should consider binding ourselves together with lengths of rope. To be separate in the swamp would have been dangerous. It sounds to me that being separated in the Maze could prove fatal."

"Friend Ulaam, could you ask the elder - was Doriana attacked before she reached your village?" Bil struggles to construct the timeline between Doriana's departure from the village and the vision granted to the prince.

"It could be, my liege, that your vision of your soul-sister was a premonition and a possible future, rather than an accounting of her present. If space is as mutable as our host suggests, perhaps the mists also blur the edges of time?"

    Savtua Swamp Village

The elder explains that Doriana was found, brought to the village, and healed, all while her employees were running for their lives in the swamp. She was rescued, healed, and then she left again, pausing only to ask the elder to send out scouts to find John, Ulaam, and Jason. But the folk do not venture into the mists for just any outsiders.

"The 'demons' we faced fell well enough," Doredan proclaims to the party, in an attempt to raise their morale after the lizard's defeatist remarks. He glances at Jason. "Once they no longer had the element of surprise, that is."

Drawing his mask with a sweep of his hand, he sets it on his face to see if anything is coming through from the other side. If not, he motions for Bil to take the lead. The priest's senses are keen, after all. "Let us procure rope to tie ourselves together, and set out."

Jason looks from Hylusi to John, then back to the elder. "If you'd have me, elder, I would stay here and help guard your people." He turns back towards the party and explains "Someone should hold a position here. It's all too easy to get lost in this misty mystery going on, and at the very least if I stay here there will be someone to shout and guide you in when you get close." He reaches into his pack and removes a coil of rope. "But I can give this to all of you. If you cinch it round your waists, you should be able to avoid being turned around in the mists."

The Magus sighed. What a waste of diamond dust the human's resurrection had been, especially since she could used the spare parts.
<Of course.> her mental voice hissed snippily. If someone must be left behind while trying to find someone in a misbegotten swamp, let it be the tracker, so he can guard a hundred lizardfolk from the demon hordes.>

It is all too clear to Doredan that the man had swiftly leapt upon an excuse to avoid further confrontations with the demons. With what had happened, could the prince blame him? Seeing as Hylusi's grim hiss serves well enough as chastisement, Doredan comments no further. The man's choices are his own; it is not as though any terms had been laid out for his resurrection.

Instead, he takes the rope. "So be it, then," and with the tool in hand, he sets about binding them together into a marching order.

Bil extends a paw, patting Jason on the shoulder. "I look forward to seeing you soon enough," he offers. Damh charges his followers to seek out new experiences; having tasted death, who could blame the man for not chancing a second draught so soon?

Turning to his adventuring companions, the haregon gives his shield a resolute thunk! "This rope will be most helpful. Allow me, your highness," he says. The armored priest takes his point at the head of the party with pride, knowing they would be depending on his keen senses to serve as their scout in the mists.

    Savtua Swamp

The party lashes themselves together, leaving enough room for some maneuverability without being held back by bonds. Following this, one of the large lizard folk, easily twice the height and heft to most of you, leads you to the eastern edge of the village. When you pass the last of the small huts and fishing supply depots, the giant 'folk points towards the east and grunts "Danger. Bring safety with you..." and he gestures towards your arms and armor. Then he waits for you all to pass out of sight before returning to his work in the village.

You travel for several hours, and it isn't long before there is no sign of the village behind you. It's been atleast a half hour since you heard the bellowing cries of alert worship by the 'Folk. The spongey, wet ground still smells fresh and clean, but the moss and the mud seems to be... greyer out here. And as you pass even further, it becomes clear that something paranormal is amiss. You reach a boundary, not a precise one, but a loose one, where the swampy terrain just... ends. And it doesn't transition into some other type of terrain, it simply gives over to a flat, empty plane of grey. Grey sky, grey horizon, grey, unremarkable earth beneath your feat. The only landmark within sight is humped shadow about the size of the largest of the 'Folk that looks like an immobile boulder shrouded by mist.

The mist itself is also mysterious. It dances before your eyes, seems to gather in your hands, and occasionally seems to have far more... substance, than any mist has any right to. If particularly vivid memories play in your minds, pulses of color and vague imagery pass through the mist like a gentle spray of color, hanging vibrantly around the issuer like a following pet for a few moments before dissipating into the ether. Whatever the true nature of this mist is, you are all having some sort of effect on it. Or is it having an effect on you? Only time will tell...
