Re: RHoD 5e IC
The party prepares to destroy the bridge, though with the time they've been granted they investigate the northern camp and the towers.
Though the dead hobs had little in the way of items of note, you do find a secreted stash of potions atop the northwest tower where the dragon had been resting.
Spoiler: Potions
Potion of Superior Healing (8d4+8)
Potion of Invisibility
There are no notes or any other instructions to be found in the camp, not in the goblin tongue nor Infernal. What you do find in one of the tents however is a goliath, manacled, bound, and gagged, alongside a drake, likewise caged and muzzled. A chest nearby contains what looks some goliath-sized equipment, that you can likely assume was taken from the otherwise stripped individual left to just their clothes.

Re: RHoD 5e IC
Paul Mauser
Paul cautiously unties the goliath, starting with her gag. "I'm going to assume that you're not on the side of the hobgoblins or their dragon. We have chased them off, for now. Would you care to share your recent history, and then we share ours?" He'll let her handle the...small dragon? Drake? Paul's not interested in losing any of his fingers to an upset animal.

Re: RHoD 5e IC
"Thanks," is the terse reply. "Seeing an orc is usually not good sign, but you're handsome after all these hobgoblins. Nice 'stache. You travel with fire and air?"
She looks at the odd group assembled in the tower. "Are you some kind of rescue? I thought I was careful about my tracks. But then, the hobgoblins caught me so I wasn't good enough." She sighs, disappointed at herself. "I'm Polina, from Red Rock. You know, up in the Giantshield mountains? My tribe heard of bugbears and goblins capturing dragons in these mountains and turning them bad. They need to stop or be stopped before they use the dragons to attack everyone." She coughs, her mouth dry, since this is probably the most she's spoken in days. Weeks, maybe.
"So you killed the dragon that was here? And their wyrmsinger? I think they wanted me to teach them my tricks with Rax. Otherwise we'd be dead." Polina frees the small blue drake as she talks about it. She coos at it and it nuzzles her hand. It looks hungry and flies off quickly as Polina says in Draconic, "Go hunt, poor thing." She begins gathering her shield and things. "I hear there's a big goblin in the mountains with an army. Is that right? Are you going to kill him too?"Last edited by Archemist; 2023-06-19 at 11:08 AM.

Re: RHoD 5e IC
Polina says, meaningfully, "Do you not destroy your enemies when you make friends of them?"
She adds, "So who ARE you?" She takes the offered waterskin from Ayalla and gulps some down. Polina proceeds to beat on her own sternum with her fist twice, and then belches loudly before handing back the waterskin with a nod of thanks.
She carefully puts on her armor, which has more bits and bobs than seems practical, and takes a little while. She dresses in silence, not sure whether you are expecting her to reward you for the rescue, join you, or do a little jig.

The half-orc straightens. "My name's Paul, Paul Mauser. I'm an imbuer of magical items and a decent hand at slinging spell-fire directly. These hobgoblins took over a keep a ways south of here, and we found some documents indicating they're planning a full-on invasion. One of their clerics had a symbol of Tiamat, which lines up with them making friends with dragons too. Nobody else around here has a big army to stop them with, so we're doing what we can to slow them down until somebody can maybe put together a real response."

Re: RHoD 5e IC
With your newfound companion rescued from the dastardly clutches of the dragon and its hobgoblin cohorts, you bravely...return the way you came. A judicious application of Shatter-spells to the base of the bridge causes at first a crumble and then a massive thundering clap as cracks run along its base. They grow, splintering the stone and sending a steady rain of dust and crumbling rocks down into the ravine below, before it all comes down in one tumultuous moment. A massive plume of dust rises up to accompany the symphony of crashes, threatening to choke you out had you not gained distance.
With your mission successful, you retreat towards the safety of the treeline, to remake your own camp, and recover for the next day - perhaps swapping stories and tales as you do so.
Spoiler: OOC
Party receives 15exp for beating the Deadly encounter and 8exp for blowing the bridge as a 'quest' objective, so 23 total from that encounter.
Assuming sheets are updated I believe that puts the party at 84/100.
You then benefit from a long rest, since I presume you're not travelling far at night.
Day 4
Though you had set watches, they prove to be unnecessary. Perhaps the wildlife had been scared off from the area by the bridge collapse, but you see neither Red Hand patrols, nor any other creatures to bother you during the night. It isn't long in your trek back to town that you reach the fork in the road once more. Bernie seems somewhat concerned about the lack of giants, and volunteers to check in on them, while the rest of you warn Drellin's Ferry, and so he bids you a hopefully temporary farewell.
Jorr continues to lead you back south along the winding back trails of the Witchwood, your victory still freshly behind you. Not long into the afternoon, while the sun hangs overhead with scorching heat, Jorr raises a hand for you to stop, pointing out a number of cocoon-like nests up in the tree branches. "Stirges, lots of 'em. Try not to let 'em latch on ya or they'll suck you dry!" His voice is little more than a whisper, but even that much seems to have roused the flying beasts, as a loud buzzing emerges - followed quickly by the razor 'nosed' creatures themselves. There's a hunger in their flitting motions, and they have you in their sights.
Spoiler: Map
Not much to say about this one really. The party's up!

Re: RHoD 5e IC
Polina nods to Jorr, in silent thanks for the warning. Then she's off like an arrow loosed from a bow, motioning to Rax to fly along to flank the bugs. They both head for the leftmost of the buzzing. Rax swoops in and snaps at one bug with his small jaws, and Polina swings her battleaxe like a large flyswatter towards the group of stirges as well. They seem well used to the teamwork, and Polina's quick commands in Draconic are more of a shorthand than sentences.
Polina and Rax don't make any attempt to stay quiet. They both roar as they charge in and start swinging.
Spoiler: OOC - Drake command, move in, regular attack x2Bonus action to have Rax bite: (1d20+6)[21] for (1d6+3)[5] piercing damage.
Polina's two attacks, aimed at finishing off Rax's bug or moving on to the others in the leftmost group of 3 stirges:

(1d20+7)[13] for (1d8+4)[5] slashing damage. Rax will use his reaction to add (1d6)[3] lightning damage to this one if it hits (from Infused Strikes).

Re: RHoD 5e IC
The party unleashes a torrent of pain upon the bugs before they can even mount a proper offensive, as expected from trained warriors. Polina and Rax dart in, axe and maw crunching down upon the tiny creatures. One of them escapes Polina's grasp, but Paul covers her with a globule of acid that engulfs the tiny bloodsucker. Leif's fire blows away the small group that emerges from its nest, incinerating them in a flurry of scorched wings. Ayalla's spirits do likewise, assailing the stirges before they can move and forcing the life from them in the blink of an eye.
When all's said and done, only three remain. Dumb as it is, one immediately flies into Ayalla's spell and perishes as a result. The other two - whether smarter or just luckier - turn towards Leif. She ducks away from one but the other flies in and latches onto her neck, slurping up her lifeblood. Jorr takes a shot, skewering the one that hadn't stuck itself into the tiefling, but one stirge against many is not a fight that will end well for the insect, and it's swiftly removed, stomped on, and killed.
Spoiler: OOC
Stirges, as it turns out, are very squishy, and vulnerable to area of effect abilities.
Polina and Rax kill two - the second attack barely misses it's strike.
Leif's Burning Hands incinerates 3.
Ayalla's Spirit Guardians ends up wiping out five.
Paul kills off one with acid splash.
Of the three remaining stirges, one flies directly into spirit guardians and immediately dies.
The two survivors attack Leif. One misses, the other hits, for 7 damage and attaches to her.
Jorr shoots the unattached one, leaving the entire party to gang up on an AC14 2HP creature; I think it's fair to say the battle is over. Not all encounters are gonna be deadly!
This was Easy so you get 5xp.
If you want to short rest to heal/recover, it's available.
Day 4, Night
After dealing with the stirges, Jorr continues leading you through the forest. On the party's advice he steers clear of the Keep a second time, and by the time night falls you're still in the thick of the forest. You settle down around a campfire for the night, and each in turn take on a night watch.
In hours of the early morning, while the rest of you are sleeping, you are rudely awakened by the sound of Jorr yelling and firing his crossbow into the darkness. Suddenly, vines spring up all around you, trying to lock you down in your bedrolls! Natural ability keeps the party from being ensnared...mostly. Jorr seems to have been more focused on reloading his crossbow and Wuffles was slow to wake, as they're swiftly bound by the greenery.
As you blink sleep from your eyes you see crawling vegetation, thick and wavy vines, creeping towards you at the edge of the campfire light. "Assassin vines!" Jorr yells while failing to de-snare himself. "They're carnivorous!"
Spoiler: Map
Getting decent mileage out of this generic dense forest map.
A night time ambush, of all things!
I rolled a d5 to decide who was on watch and it ended up being Jorr. This worked out...okay for initiative purposes!
Because the party was asleep (except for Jorr) they start Prone, you won't have your shields equipped, and if you are in medium/heavy armour you'll probably want to decide if you want 1/4 hit dice recovery instead of 1/2 for this long rest.
Round 1:
On the first turn, Jorr yells the party awake and shoots one of the vines, hitting for 11.
Paul and Leif are Surprised due to being asleep so they don't get to act.
Two of the vines crawl forward 5 feet and Animate Vines beneath the party. Wuffles and Jorr failed their strength saves, the rest of the party made them. Those two are Entangled and Restrained (DC13 athletics to break as an action). The area is also difficult terrain.
The other vine Dashes (for a whole 10ft).
Ayalla and Polina are Surprised, so they don't get to act.
Round 2:
Jorr tries an Athletics check to break the restrain and...rolls a 1. With only a +3, that is insufficient. He remains restrained.
Paul and Leif are up. You're both prone, but not restrained.

Re: RHoD 5e IC
The slithering monsters continue their assault, even in the face of the spread flames. Though the impact clearly burns them, the plantlife seems relatively unperturbed by the scorching fire and press on into the camp. As they get closer, they fling their vines forward, aiming to ensnare Polina, Rax, and Jorr - their closest foes. The practiced goliath manages to twist away even on the ground, but the drake and your huntsman are less lucky and quickly find themselves bound by constricting vines. Made worse is that the vines appear coated in some thick poisonous substance, one that immediately seeps into Rax's scales, sapping the life from it.
Spoiler: Map
Paul hits with two of his scorching rays (top and bottom)
Leif also hits with two (top and middle). She can't move 15ft west due to difficult terrain, she gets 5ft instead, after the 15ft spent on standing up from prone.
The creatures seem resistant to fire damage, despite being plants. Didn't think they were but then I reread the statblock.
One attacks Polina, and misses.
One attacks Rax, and hits (despite Prone disadvantage). It takes 14 bludgeoning damage and is Grappled (DC14 athletics/acrobatics to escape). Then at the start of its turn, it takes a further 30 poison damage (unfortunately, a high roll - 3, 3, 6, 6, 6, and 6 on 6d6).
One attacks Jorr, and hits. He takes 11 bludgeoning damage and is Grappled/Restrained (DC14 athletics/acrobatics to escape), and - assuming someone doesn't free him with their own action (that'd be Athletics-only rather than Acrobatics) - will also take poison damage (of the 6d6 variety) at the start of his turn.

Re: RHoD 5e IC
Scrambling, the party repositions themselves as best they can, moving away from the plants while flinging off spells and projectiles towards the encroaching vines. Ayalla's sacred flames strike wide, but Wuffles' bite tears a chunk of plant-flesh. Polina's vast strength reserves serve to likewise tear the Jorr from his plant-prison before the oozing liquid can seep into his system. He thanks her by loosing a crossbow bolt at the closest enemy, moments before they're all torn through a fiery wormhole a dozen feet east, adjacent to Paul who lobs a globule of acid at one, sizzlings it fronds.
Polina puts more distance between her and the enemy, not wanting to fall victim like Rax did, and takes two potshots with her longbow. They both strike, despite her preference for battleaxes. Ensnared by the vines, Wuffles is unfortunately victim to the poison just as Rax was, the foul liquid seeping into the spirit animal.
Spoiler: Map
A fair amount of the movement described didn't go as the party wished because of standing up from prone taking half your movement and the difficult terrain of the plants.
Polina frees Jorr from the vines before they can do more poison damage to him.
Ayalla's sacred flames is evaded. Wuffles can't make it to the south target due to standing up from prone, so retargets for the middle one instead. It hits for full damage, but it's a big vine; it's immune to being proned by the bite.
Jorr fires a shot at the middle target to try to get Sneak Attack. Despite only getting a 14 on the attack roll that is enough to hit for 13.
Paul's acid splash takes effect for full damage. They are not acid resistant.
Leif teleports the party away with Calcifer.
The top plant attacks Wuffles, and misses.
The middle plant attacks Wuffles, and hits, for 10 bludgeoning damage. They're grappled/restrained (DC14) and will be subject to poison damage at the start of Ayalla's turn.
The bottom plant attacks Calcifer, and hits, for 9 bludgeoning damage, however apparently the spirit is immune to being grappled/restrained, so the vines don't lock onto it, and it has nothing to fear from the poison.
Since Archemist's on holiday I botted Polina - they moved a bit northeast to keep out of vine-range and longbow'd twice on the north one that has a hunter's mark. They both hit, for not-great damage, totalling 13 including the hunter's mark damage. (3+5, 3+2).
Unfortunately she couldn't get in close to try to free Wuffles due to the difficult terrain, who took 25 poison damage at the start of Ayalla's turn; I'm pretty sure that takes them out as well. I've left the token there for the moment in case I've missed something though.
Just in case you want to focus fire (figuratively), the top and middle ones have taken about 30hp of damage each, and the bottom one has taken about 20hp of damage. None of them are bloodied (or whatever the plant equivalent of that would be. Sapped? No, that's not right...)
Party (minus Polina) are up.

"First Rax, now Wuffles?" Leif says through gritted teeth, which become sharper and longer as her horns seem to grow and the air around her sizzles with magical power, "Don't. ****. With. Our. Pets!"
Instantly a glyph appears above the plant creatures and a massive explosion of flame falls from it, incinerating them all. Calcifer, emulating Leif's anger in a way only a cute little blob of fire could, shoots a mote of flame at the nearest plant creature as well.
SpoilerLeif casts Fireball, dealing (8d6)[2][1][5][1][6][4][6][4](29) fire damage (ignores fire resist and any 1s are treated as 2) to any creature that fails the DC 16 dex save or half on a success.
Calcifer also shoots a mote of flame. To hit: (1d20+8)[13], to damage: (1d6+3)[9]"Don't think of it as dying," said Death,

Re: RHoD 5e IC
Ayalla's gentle blessing washes over the party, and perhaps spurs Jorr to action. He ducks back to the edge of the firelight, loosing another bolt at the the weakest-looking vine, though estimating damage against a writhing mass of plantlife isn't exactly easy. The real damage comes in with the combination of fire and acid from Leif and Paul, scorching and sizzling away, dissolving the ashen whips as they lash out. One of the masses falls still, its life extinguished, though the other two press on, even in the face of Calcifer's flame mote. The closest one lashes out again, its appendages whipping past Calcifer to wrap around its far meatier master, and crushes their air from her lungs in the process.
Spoiler: Map
Ayalla blesses the party, though they don't make any attack rolls that go-around!
Jorr shoots the northern target, for a whopping six damage.
Paul's acid splash hits, for full damage on both.
Leif's fireball finishes off the northern vine, and Calcifer (barely) hits the southern one.
The middle-vine Dashes a full ten feet.
The bottom vine attacks Leif, and crits for 24 bludgeoning damage; she's also grappled+restrained, though has a better chance of being freed either by damage or athletics (DC14) before the poison takes effect.
Party's up.
Middle-vine is on single digit HP.
The bottom vine is bloodied, but not quite so injured.

Paul
Paul moves closer, next to the fire, and points his wand at the two remaining vine blights, his fingers pressing on a couple of runes as it starts to emit a high-pitched whine, and then goes silent before emitting a thunderous shockwave.
Spoiler
Move to just east of the fire, then back up 10' afterwards thanks to the Mobile ground speed.
Thunderwave, 1st level, with 1d8 bonus damage from arcane firearm.
(2d8)[14] thunder damage, plus (1d8)[7] to both? or one? I'm not sure.

Re: RHoD 5e IC
Polina is still obviously mad about Rax. As the northernmost plant shrivels, Polina's hunting aura moves to surround the southernmost plant.
But the pack comes first. Polina runs over to Leif and starts tearing away at the vines.
Spoiler: OOC - Athletics(1d20+7)[26] to try to break her out. And it's a bonus action to transfer Polina's Hunter's Mark spell effect to another target. Maybe she'll get to attack it next turn.
