Default Spells for a 4th level Wizard

Quick bit of background, 3rd level wizard conjure and just taken my 1st level as a master specialist, banned schools EVO and ENCH. 2nd level spells already taken, summon monster 2 and cats grace.

im a bit stuck on what 2 spells to pick here was my short list -
    invis
    glitterdust
    web
    bears endurance
    knock
    see invis
    mirror image

open to other ideas, only PHB and SC please. Cheers in advanced.
101 things you dont want your apprentice to say:

    12. "I finally shot that owl that's been following you around!"

    75. (Loudly) "WHAT AN ILLUSION, MASTER! THE STORM GIANT WILL * NEVER * FIGURE THAT OUT!"

    108. "Don't feel bad, boss. At least the OTHER demon didn't break free!"

Invis and Glitterdust. You'll want to get the rest of that list eventually, but I'm pretty sure those are the two that will most immediately help you out. Invisibility is always, always good, and Glitterdust is an almost stupidly good battle control tool (shuts down melee threats with blinding that targets what is usually their bad save, reveals invisible creatures, and doesn't even have to be well-aimed thanks to its area? Yeah. You want that.)

most would say glitterdust and web.

Invisibility is nice though, if you need some good sneaking done, this is very nice...See invisibility is only if the campaign is such that glitterdust isn't as useful for whatever reason (like you have a rouge or invisible party members sneaking around all the time, then it might be better to look quietly).

knock is a spell I always like, but if you are doing the very limited spell dance, having a good rogue is just as good...or a strong fighter who can bash stuff.

I would choose bull's strength for a buff though if you wanna go that route, the con is fun, but there are problmes when it fades if your target isn't healed yet and is low on HP. Strength on a melee fighter typically means more hits that deal more damage, shorter fights...less need for more HP.

mirror image is a good choice only if as a mage you are constantly getting singled out by melee or ranged attackers...then the images are essentially extra HP for you. If you can stay out of trouble more often than not, mirror image is kinda a waste...though the many images would help deter anyone from attacking since it would be a wasted atatck if they are wrong...Are you often the target of hostility?

What about resist energy? If you often encounter flaming weapons, creatures with low powered elemental effects, or other minor annoyances...resist elements is a great buff that protects your people from 10 damage from each energy attack. Also highly useful against non-magical fires which rarely do more than 10 damage in any single round, thus rendering you effectively immune to normal fire...fun if combined with grease and a torch.

Invis and glitterdust are usually the first two 2nd lvl spells I take. Web and and some utitilty spell like knock usually come next, tho if you have a decent rogue, you might want something else (and knock is better on scrolls or a wand anyhow).

Rope trip if your DM hasnt banned it and you dont mind the cheese/boredom of computer game safety.. Blindness/Deafness is actually pretty nice, as you dont even need to make a ranged touch attack, and its a pretty quick win spell against low fort save casters. Sure they can always try to dispel it, but thats not just one dispel not used on the party tank, its also one round where they aren't casting something else on you or buffing up their mooks.

I dont usually bother too much with bulls strength and the like, but then again, the melee tank in my parties is usually a cleric or a druid, so rather pointless buffing the buffer, eh?

At 4th level you should get:
Glitterdust (Save or Suck) and Alter Self (Can give flight, natural armor, etc.)

I consider specialists nerfed. A few extra spells per day just isn't worth the loss of flexibility and power, IMO.

From the SpC, I would suggest Earthbind, which is a great way to defeat any flying creature, and Swift Fly, which is a great for retreating across a crowded battlefield. If you also buy a Ring of Feather Fall, you can just hang up there away from your enemies until the start of your next round with no ill effects.

From core, I would suggest Web, Grease, Enlarge Person, Glitterdust, Detect Thoughts, and Rope Trick.
