Re: OOTS #599 - The Discussion Thread
Or, to quote the Giant way back in Roy's trial: "Using Chaotic means for Lawful ends strikes me as Neutral"
Which is not the same as Evil means for Good ends, which, according to numerous D&D sourcebooks going way back to 1st edition, Evil.

Re: OOTS #599 - The Discussion Thread
Check 2nd ed DMG, 1st ed DMG, and 3.5 ed Exalted Deeds, Fiendish Codex 2, champions of Ruin, and others. There is a long standing tradition in D&D that, no matter how altruistic the motive, an evil act cannot be changed to Neutral by a Good motive. The traditional example is burning a plague-ridden village to save the rest of the kingdom.
The point to be made is the Deva said: Lawful/Chaotic. That can work, but not Good/evil.
EDIT: However, how evil an act needs to be to pull you out of Good into Neutral, tends to depend on the DM, though Fiendish Codex 2 had a rough guideline. The aforementioned villiage-burning was, in old editions considered bad enough for immediate alignment change from Good to Evil.Last edited by hamishspence; 2008-10-10 at 11:40 AM.

Re: OOTS #599 - The Discussion Thread
V wonīt disappear for long imo. Maybe 10-20 strips ?
But my feeling toward this comic isnīt rather good right now too.
No real plot advance, itīs somehow just the preparation of the preparation of the preparation of a plot advancement for a quite long period now. No success with ressing Roy, no success in finding Haley, no idea how to counter the MotJ.
I hope it will change soon, they are now close to their goals ( Haley found a guy who knows a cleric who maybe can ress Roy, V maybe gets some new ideas/powers how to find the others, ....
At least a small ray of hope would be nice. Ok we had a small one with Kubota, but that has nothing to do with the Order itself.
The latest comic is quite nice; to see V getting nuts following its own "logically correct" way.

Re: OOTS #599 - The Discussion Thread
IMHO success =/= plot advancement.
If your protagonists fail, get desperate, take a fall, hit bottom, then have the humility to take a hard look at themselves, pick themselves up and come back wiser and stronger, that's plot advancement.

Re: OOTS #599 - The Discussion Thread
Since we are using the dark side so much, the order of the stick is reminding me of star wars episode 3. But not all of it just the fact it's falling apart.

Re: OOTS #599 - The Discussion Thread
Also (I know this isn't related but) I wonder if Haley has enough gp to get a true resurrection due to the fact they do not have Roy's skeleton any more.

Re: OOTS #599 - The Discussion Thread
Haley seems to have the needed funds at the moment. However, she still needs to get the 17th level cleric, and she seems to need to destroy the Rolem.

Re: OOTS #599 - The Discussion Thread
How would that allow V to gain ultimate power? Generally, if you want to get really really powerful, you need to do more than dismiss the people who are in a position to give it to you. And an imp (or any spiritual being, for that matter) would be in an ideal position to provide V with ultimate power... for a price. Which is why I'm guessing that V decides to help the imp in exchange for ultimate power, for "all the wrong reasons," as the prophecy says.
V's four words, whatever they end up being.Last edited by DougTheHead; 2008-10-12 at 10:05 AM.

I see the four words as "I accept your offer."
Hope we find out...

Re: OOTS #599 - The Discussion Thread
Well I'm new at this forum.
And I like The Order Of The Stick allot.
Lately though after the death of Roy, it seems that the comics has lost some
of its DnD touche.
no dungeon,
no spotchecks,
no traps an no random encounter.
I really wish that the team will get back together.
Don't get me i REALLY LIKE the comics it was just better the old way.
p.s.
V' is my favorite character and i cant stand seeing him/her go.

Re: OOTS #599 - The Discussion Thread
Arg, please please don't let the fatal four words be.
SpoilerYou have a deal.
this has probably been mentioned as a possibility a bunch of times, but heck, after reading the comic again I can 't help but think that could be it.

Re: OOTS #599 - The Discussion Thread
The four words were already said. They were "Disintigrate. Gust of Wind." Remember when V was discussing writing in her spellbook and arguing that the one word of the spell couldn't possibly take up four pages in her spellbook. That was just to hammer home the point that the spell is one word so that the four words could be immediately noticed.

Re: OOTS #599 - The Discussion Thread
Sometimed in D&D the dungeons and the dragons are noticably lacking, but that doesn't make it any less D&D does it? I have played in games where the adventure took place on land and on water for at least a few session in a row.
I too wish that the team would get back together soon. But perhaps it's a case of you can't go home again. We haven't heard from Haley for a long while. Perhaps that plot has just been written off? There are always some loose ends at the end of an adventure.
