I am calling CSIS on you if you start selling our water to Americans. THIS IS HOW IT STARTS, ZODALICIOUS.
If they, or the Australians* for that matter, want snow, then they can fork over the silver for tourism.

Echoed here.
I'd buy them, I've said so already.
Note that snow is somewhat more complex to obtain than just plain ice, and the southern hemisphere and equator areas want snow badly.

I was going to try to transcribe the bit from the Simpsons episode where Bart calls Colombia to ask which way the water in their toilets drain, which is translated as "HE SAYS THE TIDE IS TURNING!" and the President shouts in Spanish "THE REBELS WILL SOON SEIZE THE CAPITAL! Same. Usually songs. But now I know exactly what I want. There'll be a procession and my coffin shall be placed in a suitably depressing carriage pulled by six grey horses to a mausoleum surrounded by landscaped parklands with plenty of flowering trees.
And there'll be choral singing.
Okay... I don't know exactly what I want.
Bah! A mind that wonders is a sign of genius!
And also surprisingly good for working out things...
I'd gladly fork over silver if in order to visit Canada. After all, I've always wanted to go to Canada.
But alas, I have not the precious metals to spend on travel.

Re: Mynxae's Maliciously Magnificent Random Banter #183
The saddest truth is that, even should you amass the wealth to visit Canada, my own shabby environs is the last place you'd want to visit. Lousy Prairie backwater with its century of failed dreams and gormless unwashed masses.
Oy, I'm losing my perspicacity, I had to rewrite that sentence three times for it to make sense. I may need to go to bed.

Re: Mynxae's Maliciously Magnificent Random Banter #183
I'm sure one merely needs to look beneath the surface.
Whereabouts do you live? My brain seems to recall you saying that the prairies stretch endless to the West while also recalling that your city stands at the Western edge of them.
Both can't be true...
Anyway... Should I visit Canada, I will make certain to visit you despite how depressing you think the municipality in which you reside is.
They would indeed be. But I chose them simply because Golden Wattle is the national flower of Australia and the Cooktown Orchid is the floral emblem of Queensland.

Oh, no idea. Just *deep breath* Monty Python, Blackadder, Red Dwarf, anything with Simon Cowell, Charlie Brooker, Yahtzee, Fawlty Towers, Piers Moron, Anne Robinson, half the people in That Mitchell and Webb Look, The Office, Ab Fab, Black Books, The Brittas Empire, Father Ted, The IT Crowd, Porridge, Only Fools and Horses, Not Going Out, Two Pints of Lager and A Packet of Crisps, Jimmy Carr, Bill Bailey, Yes, Minister and its sequel, Bottom, The Young Ones . . . I could go on.
Oh, and then there are the shows that aren't comedy related or involve reality telly. Note: this is just tellybox shows. Don't get me started on literature or I actually will be here for hours.
In most ways. And most of those most ways are forum unfriendly.

Re: Mynxae's Maliciously Magnificent Random Banter #183
A happy coincidence, then, because that buttery yellow and that purplish-pink march fabulously together, especially set off by green.
I live in Winnipeg, which is perhaps 2/3 from the west end of the Prairies. To be fair, it's not altogether as horrible as I like to declaim -- I just need to move to a better neighbourhood. Every city has its underclass of subhuman cretins, I suppose, it just seems like the overly abundant inmates run the asylum around here.

My visit to the UK is inevitable. I have not-altogether-distant family somewhere in England, and I wish to visit the places whence my grandfather came such as Lincolnshire Cathedral where he used to play the organ. I often suffer pangs of homesickness for the country I have never set foot in, a kind of diaspora for an unseen homeland.
[Once I left a phone message for my mother in a RP accent, and she did the same back to me -- and to hear my mother speaking in that accent was as if I heard her true voice for the first time. She sounded beautiful and I wanted to hug her.]
I shall certainly wear my blue velvet coat and a garish handkerchief when, at that time, we become acquainted over claret, mademoiselle.
The Aurora is a beauty not to be adequately described, most certaignly, as is the beauty of a full moon glittering in an expanse of virgin snow laid in mounds on naked boughs. There are also frequent and fantastic thunderstorms during summer of which the endless prairie horizon gives perfect viewing.
How about this -- when the inevitable blankets of opaline snow are laid, I will give you photography.
Please don't stab me *tries to fluff out and look cute*

I heard a construction worker shouting in Spanish yesterday -- I think his accent was Mexican, but I am not certain -- and it made me think about how old Romans would have sounded shouting. The cadence of Spanish makes me think of Latin the most, of the three biggest Romance languages, even more than Italian [I get very, very few opportunities to hear Portuguese though].

Re: Mynxae's Maliciously Magnificent Random Banter #183
Looketh, this are the reasons I yearn for fleeing from my land of births (an of ironic not origin); to the places where one can have the wonders of nature without having to leave the concepts of civilisation.
Seems like a fair tradeoff, a life for a photograph.
From said episode I myself prefer the one making fun of Argentina, if only because it's actually plausible considering it's track record.
I believe it would have depended on the region and the origin of said shouter. A Roman in Spain wouldn't have sounded much different than a modern day Spanish speaker; unless you mean Roman as one born in Rome, in which case there would have been more hand gestures rather than words.
I've never felt Portuguese to be close to Latin, it's certainly more melodic and I believe it has a wider gamma of sounds to work with. My main contact with it is mainly through Bossa Nova lyrics which is not a good way to judge a language though. My understanding is that if you know Portuguese you understand Spanish but not the other way around.
Of the romance language apart from obviously Spanish I've had a relatively constant contact with Italian (due to my mother's side being entirely Italian) and the variations from my grandparents native regions. The Iron Avatarist Crypt of Fame - Exorcising photobucket from the historic archives of the forum.

Atleast its not me. That's good to know.
So, hey, random question to everyone, but I've been getting a lot of texts from my phone provider telling me I'm allowed to upgrade my phone now, and I'm wondering...is it worth it? Because as it is, my cool little Samsung Flip Phone from like a billion years ago is in perfect condition, and does everything I want it to do.

Some phone plans do include an upgrade without a change of the terms of the contract as part of the contract because of the expected lifespan of the phones involved.
What, exactly, is the case here I can't determine because I have no knowledge of Canadian cellphone companies or how or if they differ from the ones here in the U.S.

Beat jumping off of a bridge, but those neon orange glasses they had there made my brain contort painfully as it kept insisting that I must be drinking orange soda and that there was something wrong with the orange soda I was drinking.

This is all very interesting to me, thank you. You're a fascinating character.
The few times I have heard [Brazilian] Portuguese, especially given the nubile male speaker, I had to visit the fainting couch for a while. I have also heard it told -- though by whom, or why, I remember not -- that it sounds the most Latiny. Now you tell me otherwise, and I am inclined to credit you more than my sketchy recollection.
Of Romance, I am only acquainted with French; but I think of it as greatly deviated from its Latin progenitor: it does not make me think of machismo Romans the way Spanish does, nor does it sound at all in its lickable cadences like I imagine Latin to have had.Last edited by Kneenibble; 2012-10-16 at 07:12 PM.

Not only is the contract going to be expensive to compensate for the equipment being free, but there is a chance the new phone will have features you never use and make the features you did use practically inaccessible if the time gap between phones is too big.
Thou art welcomed and thanked. You are in turn a character of brobdingnagian taste and unmatched elegance.
My mother and my sister have returned today from their voyage to Brazil; their experience confirms my recollection of Portuguese speakers understanding Spanish to a decent degree but not vice-versa, their video recordings are also rather enlightening in terms of informal Portuguese being spoken and why one should not ever enter a favela.
I do coincide that French is rather different from Latin, even if part of it is due to my bias against French.
The closest I have heard to Latin is one particular variation of Italian (or it may be a language of its own seeing as Italian "dialects" do seem to be independent languages according to academics, which has the side benefit of allowing me to qualify for polyglot.) which I heard from an uncle living in Sardinia, which I happened to understand slightly better than my mother who is fluent in Italian (mainly by virtue of hints of knowledge of Latin).Last edited by AsteriskAmp; 2012-10-16 at 07:37 PM.

Spanish/Portgueuse (As a dumb American, I fail to understand the difference between any European languages that isn't a Romantic/Slavic side-by-side. But all things east of Germany sound Polish, all West and South sound Spanish. Which sounds better than French, I feel. Better than Latin, because of its flourish. And Portuguese, as far as I am aware, is just sexier Spanish. (How it is improved, I can barely grasp, Spanish is sexiness. )
