Re: Who do the roaches work for
I'm missing something somewhere. I thought an Arnold Palmer was just ice tea & lemonade. There's something I don't know about the effect of those ingredients on a pancreas?

Re: Who do the roaches work for
So when I have a gin & lemon (meaning lemonade), I'm assaulting all my organs at once? Good to know, I guess.

Re: Who do the roaches work for
Hell yeah! I'm going to get rich!
Technically, sugar does not enter the pancreas the way toxins enter the liver. Rather it produces enzymes that empty into the bowels and break down (among other things) carbohydrates there,in addition to secreting hormones that regulate the metabolism of sugar.Last edited by Metastachydium; 2020-10-14 at 05:32 AM.

Re: Who do the roaches work for
I get my Arnold Palmers by the gallon jug from Arizona Ice Tea (shameless plug). I have to keep some on hand at all times for when M'Lady visits; she's a fiend for ice tea. (I also like their Ginseng tea.)
They first turned up in the Evil coffee shop in SoD which Team Evil was frequenting. I think the cook actually opened a gate to the lower planes for some of his ingredients and the roaches snuck through, but I could be remembering that bit wrong.

Re: Who do the roaches work for
I am pretty sure they're working for the IFCC. Sabine suggested the fiends have pawns on every team in the conflict, and the roaches make a lot of sense as spies on Team Evil. Despite the fact that they're always around, coming and going as they please, they are pretty much assumed to be harmless comic relief, so neither the capriciously violent Xykon or the ruthlessly analytical Redcloak try to kill them or think twice about speaking freely in front of them.

Re: Who do the roaches work for
It's the only way to drink Iced Tea(unsweetened, per my wife's informed opinion. (Though we do prefer to put a couple of mint leaves and a lemon wedge in ours ...). Granted, the only Iced Tea that I prefer any more is Long Island Iced Tea, but that's a real strain on the liver after two or three.

Re: Who do the roaches work for
Hmmmm... did they, though? Lord Shojo pushed the story forward by putting the Order on trial. The lawyers, as established comic-relief characters, were handy to be used as attorneys for the prosecution, just as Celia was established to be going back to get her paralegal degree when she left the Dungeon of Dorukan, thus she was available for the defense. Economy of storytelling dictated bringing back familiar characters rather than creating a whole new set of lawyers.
Jones and Rodriguez never had the sort of fourth-wall-breaking powers the roaches display, though. The roaches explicitly act as a Greek chorus and comment on the action from an outsider perspective, while still being on the stage.
The roaches themselves commented on how many sides are involved in the story at one point, and didn't one of them say he counted nine? Which would be a wholly disingenuous comment for the author to put in their mouths if they themselves were one of them, I think. Yes, we've had some shocking reveals, but never without clues leading up to them in retrospect. If anything, I think the roaches role contradicts the idea that they are going to take an active role opposing anybody.

Re: Who do the roaches work for
I had actually forgotten. Fair point.
But in their subsequent appearances, I believe they had a few, they became bumbling attorneys instead of visitors from behind the fourth wall, unless I'm very mistaken; while the roaches have not changed, they still have the same function of making asides to the audience and being aware that they're doing so. So I stand by the main point.

Re: Who do the roaches work for
I don't think occasionally filtering info to the IFCC changes their role in the story that much and it doesn't change their nature either. It's unlikely they're going to become giant roaches that start fighting people. But it's also pretty clear that Team Evil has been on the IFCC's radar for awhile, since they seem interested in making the conflict over the Gates continue. And the roaches have been following Xykon and Redcloak since just about the beginning of their alliance to take the Gates. It doesn't seem absurd to me that they could be spies.

Re: Who do the roaches work for
Why would the IFCC need the roaches? Couldn't they just spy on everything using their HD TV? The roaches can't exactly influence Team Evil in the way that Qarr or Sabine could in their respective factions.

Re: Who do the roaches work for
But they need that big TV to watch and seems like they can only watch one thing at a time. They probably have other evil things to do and having the roaches around means they can passively gather information. Sure, it's not quite the same as having a major pawn on the team, but exerting heavy influence on either Xykon or Redcloak would be difficult if not impossible (they needed V's once a century deal to get Xykon moving last time, after all). The Fiends are complex schemers and don't leave much to chance, not to mention there's no one else on Team Evil that even remotely makes sense as a spy.

Re: Who do the roaches work for
If that is true, why did Jirix smash one of them, probably because he did not want to be observed in his duties in Gobbotopia?
Is there a possibility that the Goblinoids are working on a plan against the Giant?
Do the Goblinoids hold the Giant responsible for their suffering?
Do they think the Snarl can be used to blackmail the Giant?
Sinister questions... Dum, dum, dum, dum...Life is like a ladder in a henhouse; it is short, but full of guano.

Re: Who do the roaches work for
What you have to remember is that, although it's abundantly clear to us that the roaches work for The Giant, it may not be so obvious to Jirix, who lacks our perspective. He probably thinks he's doing The Giant a favor by "thinning the herd" and bumping off some of the weaker villainous characters.

Re: Who do the roaches work for
Jirix doesn't even know about The Giant, though, except inasmuch as all the characters are sometimes aware that they're operating in a story. But this genre awareness comes and goes, except for the roaches for whom it's seemingly permanent.
Jirix was just fed up with the constant sarcastic background remarks, and he was finally able to do something about it; once Team Evil had left the building, nobody would object if the remaining roaches were done away with.
