Re: My Little Pony LIV:E Long and Pony!
The Canterlot Gardens Fighting is Magic Tournament just ended.
Result
SpoilerHirosashii won with Applejack. Alpaca took 2nd place with Rainbow Dash
Rainbow Dash looks really impressive, I have to say, and Applejack looks completely overpowered to me. The final four were all AJ and RD, no Twilight, Pinkie, or Rarity made it out of the round of 8. I'm concerned that the commitment to having AJ as a high hp character is going to make her OP almost no matter what. The way the good people seemed to play involved careful poking into very long combos as soon as they scored a solid hit. Because AJ has such high HP compared to every other character, AJ can take 4-5 such combos, whereas nearly everypony else dies in 2-3.

Re: My Little Pony LIV:E Long and Pony!
No. I am too lazy and unreliable. But ask anyway, because you never know what you'll get round here.
Well, having not seen and being no expert, this could be several things. It could simply be that yes, Applejack is a little OP.
Alternatively, it could be a metagame issue. That is to say, there exist in potentia tactics that will reliably obliterate AJ, to the point where people will look back and laugh at the idea of her being high tier, and they just haven't emerged yet. Or perhaps she's just simpler than the others, or better suited to the players who picked her, or any number of other little things.
I think that it would be strangely fitting if AJ and RD were the two higher tier of the characters, personally. Someone invariably ends up in that spot, it seems, so there are worse ways the balance could have fallen.

Re: My Little Pony LIV:E Long and Pony!
It may just be a case where having high HP means she's very easy to pick up. Relative to other characters, it means you don't get as punished for messing up because you don't lose as big a percentage of your overall health. Unless I'm horribly mistaken, this was a prerelease tournament, correct? Once other people get a hang of the other characters, AJ may fall back into line power-wise. I seem to remember her style as being rather straightforward brawling, while the others relied more on teleporting, traps, and other such fancy tricks.
If it turns out she is overpowered after folks get the hang of the game, then I think you all know what the next step should be:
SpoilerI'm developing a game. Let's see what happens! Complex.

Re: My Little Pony LIV:E Long and Pony!
Well, I watched the last set of rounds from the final four, and everyone playing was really good, even though it's a prerelease tournament. I'm not saying they were experts the way people are with Street Fighter or Marvel v. Capcom, but the players that made it to the top rounds all knew the moves of every character and could consistently block attacks and execute all their combos and specials.
So, if there is a serious anti-AJ tactic, it's got to be something subtle, because it's not something that really good fighting game players who were familiar with all the characters were able to pick up. Also, the issue, and the reason I think it's so serious, is that AJ punishes mistakes more heavily than any other character. That is, the best AJ players were doing 20-25 hit combos that nobody was able to escape all day, so if you made one mistake that let AJ get the combo starter hit, you lost between 1/3 and 1/2 your hp. Although AJ players also made mistakes sometimes, the high life of the character made it so that the could afford a couple mistakes and still win.
I suppose it's possible either that
1) there's a good way to escape AJ's combo and nobody knows it or
2) the AJ players were just way better than everyone else at the tournament except a couple Rainbow Dash people.
But just having watched the gameplay, AJ looks really strong to me.

That was fantastic.
Uh, can't discuss this without huge spoilers and this isn't the place for it. Suffice to say that I think anything with Monobear gets the Grimdark tag.

I know this isn't directed at me but:
1. The realization that life doesn't have to suck as badly as the modern world suggests
2. To take a step closer to your dream, no matter how insignificant
3. To know that you are not the only person who sees the things you do as worthwhile and good.

Re: My Little Pony LIV:E Long and Pony!
Hey, they updated the character movesets on the website! Rarity's apparently got 3 versions of her Gem Super, as well as a Level 2 version of it. I wonder if they got some footage of it.... I also wonder what her Ex Eruption Gem looks like.
Other than "downward swipe", Twilight doesn't seem to have changed at all. Which is fine; the Ryu usually doesn't need much tweaking of movesets.
Super Saiyan Jack's counter I didn't really see much of. You guys should demonstrate it when we finally get to fighting!
Pinkie Pie seemed to stay the same. Timing wise, I don't like her cartwheels. Too easily telegraphed from what I saw. And Pinkie Pie seems like the last type of person who should be predictable.
They're taunting us about Rainbow Dash and her current lack of even a level 1 Super.... Personally, I'd like to see a Hurricane move like she used on the Parasprites and the Cotton Candy Clouds, and on Twilight to dry her off... it'd be reminding of the Mighty Tornado! Still think that a lot of her animation looks... what's the word? Off Model?
And it's even more taunting that Fluttershy didn't seem to get used at all. Or did I miss her?
Can't wait for ya'll's tournament. Single Elimination? Best 2 out of 3? Do we have to pick characters now or when the official public version comes out? Might we have another one once all 17 characters are made playable? I'd stick around for that...

pretty sure fluttershy isn't coded into any build anyone here can get at.

Re: My Little Pony LIV:E Long and Pony!
When you say things like that, you make me want to play the leaked build...
Actually, she seemed to be able to fly for free. It looked like a command dash (possibly listed as her Rainbow Dash) was one of her magic based moves.
She's still in need of some polish... hopefully they'll be done by Christmas.... WE NEED A CHRISTMAS FIGHT!

Re: My Little Pony LIV:E Long and Pony!
As far as I know, yeah, it's not available, but my first introduction to Fighting is Magic was this video demonstrating how underpowered she'd be. As someone who's no good at traditional fighting games, I wouldn't mind if there have been no changes to her since then.

Re: My Little Pony LIV:E Long and Pony!
I was actually -JUST- watching this video. XD
Yes, because a 5 second long match going into an immediate instant kill is a good thing. Though I wouldn't mind that as her Hyper, despite it's lack of Flash...
I expect her to handle a bit like Olimar from the information via the website, fighting alongside her animal friends, with her Supers being one of the stronger animals. Or a grapple like attack based on when she decided to turn badass and appears to murder a freaking -bear-. Then again, she was always kinda badass. Manticore, Red Dragon, Cocatrace -WHILE- being Petrified.Last edited by INoKnowNames; 2012-09-30 at 01:45 AM.

Well, for me, the alternative is getting my butt kicked in about 6 seconds. Ponify Puzzle Pirates, then we'll talk.

Re: My Little Pony LIV:E Long and Pony!
I dunno, in the leaked version, it's possible to survive a 100 hit 30 second long combo with Twilight Sparkle, so unless you derped like ****, you'd have to last at least 10 or so seconds.
Hopefully by the time ya'll get to play the official one, it will have such things taken care of.
Does this mean I can guess you won't be entering the tournament?Last edited by INoKnowNames; 2012-09-30 at 02:35 AM.

Re: My Little Pony LIV:E Long and Pony!
Even if my schedule allowed it, I'd be a joke entry at best. I'd get my butt kicked by Dan if I were playing Mortal Kombat.
Before you point anything out about what characters are from what games, I want you to consider exactly how bad at traditional fighting games I could possibly be."Okay, so I'm going to quick draw and dual wield these one-pound caltrops as improvised weapons..."
