Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
Congrats to everyone on the last competition - as VT said, a TIE is unheard-of in these things and goes to show the quality of entries we get.
That said, I'm looking forward to the new contest - I have no idea what I'm going to do yet, but an urban theme looks promising...The Playgrounder Formerly Known as rtg0922

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
Hmm...Kind of a toughie this one is. I was hoping to do something humorous but all the ideas that immediately spring to mind are for horror campaigns.
Not that horror hasn't done pretty darn good for me so far...Revised avatar by Trixie, New avvie by Crisis21!

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
It's a pretty wide-open theme, so just use your imaginations.
For inspiration Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman would be a good bet, or take a look at The Spirit trailer here.
It'd actually be pretty cool if we had some pulp fiction/noir type entries.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
I noticed the rules mention towns and cities, possibly implying we can do small town monsters. Can we ? I have a few ideas I'm chucking around.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
Just a small town kobold, living in a lonely world,
She took the lightning rail going anywhere,
Just a city ghast, born and raised on Balor's Pass,
He took the lightning rail going anywhere.
A cleric making quite a fuss, troglodytes with oderous musk,
For a smile they can share the night,
It goes on and on and on and on...
Wizards, waiting... walkin' down the boulevard,
Greater Shadows searching into the night,
Torches...Changelings,
Living just to find emotion,
Hiding somewhere in the night.
Working hard to get my fill, everybody wants a thrill,
Betting anything to roll the dice just one more time,
Some will crit, some will fail,
Some are born with Vorpal Flails,
Oh role-playing never ends...
It goes on and on and on and on.
Too good of a chance to pass upLast edited by Lappy9000; 2008-09-03 at 11:12 AM.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
Wait... are the monsters spose to be the kind you'd find in an urban area? or do you mean based off of real urban legends? cause I have this sick idea for a "Spontaneous Combustion" monster <_<;;;

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
I was thinking of swapping out the entry I've already got up and I was wondering what everyone else thought. I've put the draft description of my alternative entry in spoilers below, do you think I should stat the idea out or just stick with the entry I've got?;
SpoilerSpirit of Dullness
Large urban areas can be dull places. Thousands of people inhabit them yet its still possible to be isolated. People can travel to their jobs and see the same faces for decades and still view them as nothing more than a stranger. Never striking up a conversation, never exchanging pleasantries and never even as much as giving a smile. Some evil mages have taken advantage of this, binding the would-be-departed spirits of those who have lived such lives to the material plane and using them to create servants as mindlessly loyal and ferocious as zombies, but much more cunning.Hi, I'm back, I guess. ^_^I cosplay and stream LPs of single player games on Twitch! Feel free to message and run any past me. Had this year's written up until October, but afterward don't have anything specific in mind as of yet.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
Congrats to everyone on the last competition. Many many awesome entries.
I'll probably be tossing my own into this one, being a city dweller and all I feel like I'm obligated. Just what yet...I dunno.[CENTER]So You Wanna Be A DM? A Potentially Helpful Guide

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
The first draft of my chiminey grazing Smokey Floaters is up.
Bisected8: Normally I would PM you this, but my box is bursting at the seams and I am nervous about deleting anything just at the moment. High charisma seems especially at odds with the theme of your entry. Based on my thinking with the Beige Dragons I would suggest considering making a special ability that lets them use their wisdom instead of their charisma to determine their defection bonus and then swapping the Charisma and Dexterity scores... prudence and forethought to avoid the unexpected seems like a trait for dullness.Last edited by DracoDei; 2009-01-06 at 03:43 AM.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
I thought about it, the problem is wisdom doesn't really fit into the theme of something which is based around the same old same old (at least to me, a high wisdom score implies a wide range of knowledge), while your Biege dragons were dull in the sense, for example, a stuffy old librarian would be, the theme here is more in line with someone who just follows the same rountine without thinking. In the end I decided it could be charismatic in the same way that people prefer familiar things.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread
Ok, my entry is up. However, I'm having a little trouble with the CR. The creature itself is rather weak, but it's special abilities/attacks make it extraordinarily powerful. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
“Sometimes, immersed in his books, there would come to him
the awareness of all that he did not know, of all that he had not read;
and the serenity for which he labored was shattered as he realized the
little time he had in life to read so much, to learn what he had to know.”
