The Rules.
Please Read Them!

In order to try and keep these threads from becoming unmanageable, some rules have been created, and they accent the forum rules. Please read those first.

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.
2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".
3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.
4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.
5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."
6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."
7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.
8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.
9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.
10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.
11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details

:elan:Anyone found breaking the rules will be sent to stand in the corner and receive a very stern talking to! :elan:

This thread is for random discussion, not random chit chat. People have set up an unofficial IRC chat thingy (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12321) for that sort of thing. Not only will you not annoy the people here, you will also help increase the popularity of the IRC chat. It's win/win/win!

And now, apparently, pie. Which I have had the past several days, by virtue of working at a grocery store that sells decent premade pies. big chunk of pie for break, how could you say no?

On the downside of that, I'm rapidly running out of ice-cream.

No. They have a really horrible plate of spaghetti. Remind me never to order it again. The salad and rolls are ok though. (And the beer was really needed.)

They should be illegal for STUPIDITY everywhere. :smallsigh:

Stupidity is both widespread and catching...it's like a virus or something.

In the UK it's illegal for kids to play conkers at school because of health and safety unless they are wearing goggles....I mean come on....

Mind you, I'm capable of hurting myself on absolutely anything, so I guess I need the looking after.

Thank ye. I figured it was appropriate.

Also notes that Segways are illegal in the Netherlands.

No longer, they need lights a horn and number plate, then go trough a checkup and then you can have them. the producers have promised to make those features standard for the models shiped to the netherlands.

Speaking of calculus I just got a booklet from uni telling me what will be on the test during the first week.

Basically it's more basic than sticks and stones. I seriously doubt they expect you to get a single question wrong...

mangosta71
2008-09-12, 03:09 PM
Well, what do you expect? Calculus is easy. The only math class I had that I thought was hard was my Prob/Stat course, and that was mostly just because I took it my last semester, while my Cal classes were in my first-third. So a couple years had passed between them.

So . . . it involves Michael Barrymore? :smallconfused: Bet I got his name wrong and all.
But pool murders are really quite funny. You've got to kill someone, in a pool and presumably, surprise them.
Now, drowning's really easy to do but if you want it really dramatic you should -

And I love Mock the Week, even if it's just repeats. Frankie, Hugh, Andy and Russel are fantastic.

It was, actually, absolutely delicious (and all gone).

What else does it taste similar to? I've heard that kangaroos are tasty, but not in what way.

How to kill people in pools? Jump up behind them from in the water, and set the pool on fire.

Oh, my gods. I'm not the only one who loves biltong.

When we were in London, we were near this dairy. Mum sent me to get some dishwashing liquid one day, and I walked in and saw packs and PACKS of biltong.

I bought all of it.
Mum was not pleased.
It was delicious.

I expected that a course that required a super special STEP qualification for entry to at least assume you knew the basic principle of calculus!

Oh well I suppose, if it's all too easy I'll have more time to waste doing nothing.

According to my father (because I really wouldn't know) it is traditional in university maths classes to revise the entire A-level syllabus in the first week or so. Then they move on to more complex stuff. At the same pace. If you're still finding it easy at the end of the first term then you're probably very good. If you're still finding it easy by second year then you may just be a genius.

I know I should google it, but I'm lazy. What is biltong?

Today was an absolutely terrible day.

I have a song to write for music which I have started three times and given up on three times. I just don't like anything I'm writing at the moment. I have until next Wednesday, but my only chance to write the song will be before and after school. I don't have the music program at home, the demo version cannot save, and I can't afford the program.
This is especially frustrating because I consider myself fairly musical and I'm a fairly good composer. It's the damn lyrics that are tripping me up, though. The lyrics and the tune refuse to go together, and when stuff refuses to go together quickly, I decide I don't like it and have to start again.
Half of me is saying "Dude, it's a freaking assessment for a subject that you'll never pursue inside of school. Why bother?" and my proud, perfectionist side is saying "But I want to do it right! I just want to have it perfect!" And then the other half ((yeah, I have three halves)) is saying "Well I can't be bothered but I'm going to waste a lot of time moaning about it, procrastinating, and getting distr---ooh, there's a bird!"

Also, Curly, I have converted my mum to The Book Thief. Now you have mentioned it, I must try find more books by Markus Zusak...

My major goal is to get back into the gym at work, especially since I generally have absolutely nothing to do at least half the day (this upcoming week it's looking like afternoons). The trouble is I hurt my foot and it took several months to heal, so I don't have anywhere near the endurance I had at the start of the year. Also, the lack of exercise the past while has made me feel extremely lazy. And since none of my other habits changed, I put on probably 30-40 pounds. :smallmad:

Ah, procrastination.
The gift that keeps on giving and then beats you over the head with a live aardvark and sells your comatose body to lonely Japanese businessmen.

Also, my in my Writing class, I am apparently the best(or at least most consistent) writer of poetry.
This is my best work to date:My cup,
Standing on stone,
Washes away.

My hair,
White with salt,
Tastes dry.

My feet,
Sinking through paper,
Are gone.Don't knock you own work until you can compare it to others and see that it's terrible.

I actually like Mondays, in a perverse sort of way.

It is the day that I am busiest at work, so it generally goes by very fast.

Friday is a different story.

There's more to consider in choosing a day to dislike then to simply compare its proximity to the weekend (or whichever days you have off.)

The most important factor in choosing a favorite day is length of time until you have to work again. I have a standard M-F job, so Saturday is my favorite day because not only do I not have to work that day, but I also don't have to go to work the next.

My favourite day of the week is Tuesday. Middle of the week (in this country - Muslim calender/holy day offsets the week by one day).

Just feels like standing on a time-mountain's precipice. You can look backwards through the week and see for miles, and look forwards, and see for miles.

Same goes with summer and looking through a year.

I'll agree with that. Does that make Friday or Sunday your 2nd favorite day?

Sunday you have no work, but must work the next day.
Friday you work, but then you have the whole weekend ahead of you.

Personally, I favor Friday in that debate.

Oh gods; why can't I ever sleep on SUnday nights?! And even though I had a full three hours free today my epic procrastination (combined with the awesomeness that is Higgers) meant I either talked or did jack for the full time.
And I have a formal letter to write, in French, and my stalker, attention - seeking cat is headbutting me in the arm as I type and she has relegated me to the bottom right hand corner of the mattress.
ANd there's that letter to right.
And I'm spacing out; haven't slept since 10am Sunday morning. Et une lettre informelle . . . I swear by Ma'at that I will get it done before nine.
At least it doesn't have to be long.

And to make things worse I had to wear the Jeans That Don't Fit today so even with a belt pulled to the last hole they kept falling down. And I had to get from one side of the campus to the other in under five minutes and down two flights of stairs and up one flight of stairs as well. Under those five minutes.

Well, Mondays are much better for me now, given that I'm running the first game of D&D my group has played in about 3 or 4 years.

Eberron game using Pathfinder rules.

Action points really need to be renamed AWESOME POINTS THAT YOU SHALL BOW BEFORE!

The group's changeling rogue survived a 2000ft fall in Sharn thanks to timely invervention of the warforged wizard's floating disk and a Action Point-aided jump.

Then he proceeded to get kicked in the face by the other changeling he was chasing. :smallwink:

Now, to actually stat those recurring villains. Ak, Shrapnel and Roughhouse.

On a semi-related note, does a warforged armed with a component that shoots lightning bolts too powerful? Or does the awesomeness make it alright?

Depends how often it does so, really. If you were to power it by sticking a wand into the slot, like a battery, I wouldn't have a huge problem with it. If it lets the warforged go all Palpatine on everyone all the time whenever he feels like, it's a bit powerful.

On a semi-related note, does a warforged armed with a component that shoots lightning bolts too powerful? Or does the awesomeness make it alright?

It would probably count as an inbuilt wand whatsit component from the ECS.
Probably not overpowered
the wand will probably require UMD checks to activate
it'll run down quickly enough (50 charges or 2/day won't last long if used as a primary weapon)
a characteristic weapon like that will teach its own counter (energy resistance) quickly enough
Functionally it would be not dissimilar to a breath weapon: intermittent substantial damage

There's a "Self Help Day" on Wednesday in my school. Basically we're sent 10 KM along the mountains in a circle, raising money for the school, except we're not allowed to get sponsors. It wouldn't be so bad but as I'm in year 13 we're given the job of standing around with friends all day telling people which way to go - I did this last year and it was fun. However this year I have no good friends (I stayed back a year to finish off two AS courses I started last year) so I really don't want to go just to sit around by myself doing nothing.

Besides, I'm not much of a walker. I think I'll just stay at home and do something productive, like, I don't know, homework perhaps? Instead of wasting my time sitting around watching little brats raise a handful of pennies for my stupid school, and developing a cold in the process.

Can all the British people name things that represent Britishness, it's actually for Film but I already have an idea.

Rain= Represents the Passive Aggressiveness of British people(We'll complain but do nothing about it).

What's British? Entire books have been written on the subject mate. I particularly recommend Hilaire Belloc, George Orwell and Jeremy Paxman on the English (coz, let's face it, the English set the tone for Britishness, by sheer weight of numbers if naught else). I have little enough time for that dreary tourist Bill Bryson, and would only recommend him to the limited understanding of a contemptible Johnny Foreigner.

As for what defines classic Britishness: pragmatism, phlegmatic stoicism, rigorous self-discipline, rampant hypocrisy, a tolerance for eccentricity, casual arrogance towards foreigners, the belief that one's home is one's castle, twitching net curtains, the phrase "I know my rights", and the unshakable belief that - aside from HM the Queen and the BBC - the country has gone completely to the dogs. pace Orwell we have hot water bottles and tweed nightwear instead of love lives, and the country runs on a diet of tea, scones and Victoria sponge.

Our favourite war heroes all die in the attempt (Hotspur, Wolfe, Nelson, Gordon), and the best kind of war is one where the British are beleaguered and alone, but remain steady and unbowed.
The quintessential British love story is "Brief Encounter".
The quintessential British composers Elgar and Vaughn Williams.

@Edge: The Grauniad is not quintessentially English you scruffy little reprobate, The Times (which may be appended "of London" in the presence of benighted colonials) is.

Also, and don't take this the wrong way any of you British folks out there: You have pretentious accents. :smalltongue:

I assure you, we haven't. A Bostonian accent ("Hahvahd yahd...") is pretentious (http://definr.com/pretentious); an accent dating back to before William the Conqueror is anything but. :smallwink:

Y'all have ten seconds to decide who would win in a fight, Gorilla's with Shotguns or Velociraptors with RPC' (http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j96/Logicone/RocketPropelledChainsaw.jpg)s.

On a more serious note, really hope I win the bet I made with my fellow AP Algebra student. If I lose, I have to hand him 5$ and eat a Teaching Certificate. Long Story.

A food made with beef, tomatoish sauce, chili peppers, sometimes beans, and in this case, also cheese. Chili (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chili_con_carne)

Maybe, just maybe, the movie will be okay.

Maybe, just maybe, the movie will be okay.

I've seen only ONE half-well done movie based on a video game, and it was Silent Hill. Statistically speaking, it will also be a mediocre movie.

List of movies based on video games I remember so far:

-Super Mario Bros
-Street Fighter
-Mortal Kombat
-Alone in the Dark (ugh. It hurts to remember)
-Tomb Raider
-Hitman
-Bloodrayne (It hurts even harder)

If anyone else remembers any movie I missed, be my guests and add them to the list.

@V: Oh, yeah. I knew I was forgetting something important.

Final Fantasy had some good fight scenes, and was an interesting movie. It would have been better if most of it actually made sense. Yes, I played FF7, and it still made no sense.

Street Fighter.

Guile was the hero.

Not Ryu, or even Ken. And Ken was also American, so he should have been the hero.

Dhalsim is an evil scientist and E. Honda is a... cameraman?

If that movie was terrible, I shudder at the thought of an even worse movie based on Street Fighter Alpha...

I like the first Mortal Kombat, think it's awesome, the second one...not so much.

Oh right, you were joking, that makes sense.

FF: Advent Children was very flawed, you needed to have seen FFVII, it's got bad pacing really and the plot would have been better if they made it a sequel game like DoC. Doesn't work as a movie, works as a really long cutscene though.:smalltongue:

Being the horribly superficial person that I am, my friends had to lure me into Final Fantasy with Crisis Core. Shiny graphics...

My problem is that I kinda know the plot now.

Also, I don't understand why people are so attached to Aerith. Though I did cry buckets when Zack died.

Street Fighter was awful. My sister decided to watch AC dispite not playing FF7, and she said it was good apart from the pointless cameos and the fact that the last half an hour was weird.

She might not have found the last half hour wierd if she had played through FF7 (but for some people, doing so didn't help, which is fair enough considering how strange the plot of Advent Children is), but it's great that she enjoyed it regardless.

You fail at understanding the hilarious awesome that was the Street Fighter movie! It is the very embodiment of so bad its good (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SoBadItsGood). It's nearly as fantastically bad as "Beyond Reanimator". Come on, how can you not laugh your ass off at poor Simon Callow telephoning it in, or at the antics of the late great Raul Julia, or at Van Damme and Kylie Minnow as AN peacekeepers with their bad-ass stealth boat, or at Blanka the Hulk.

I have an issue with Crisis Core though, I'm sure many people wanted to know Zack's story but he was only there to be Cloud's idol, he wasn't supposed to be some utter badass that gets involved in an awesome plot(I don't actully have Crisis Core so I may be wrong), I think it kind of cheapens Cloud even more in a way. This should probably be in a gaming conversation.

Personally I'd love to see a miniseries of FFIV, but I'd demand that the majority(if not all) of the dialogue was took from the DS game. It'd be fun to hear You Spoony Bard!

Street Fighter was good as a mindless action movie but no good as a Street Fighter movie.

EDIT: Do you really think the Chun Li movie with Kristin Kreuk will be any better?

Arrrrgh.
InkGuy's laptop decided to reformat my mp3 player when it couldn't read it, and so I lost all my music. I've got it all on my computer, but it took me two hours to get all the songs I wanted on there. Then, since I use it as a soundtrack for several of my 360 games and I really can't be bothered to put all the music back I was going to put music onto the hard drive.
OH HEY. YOU CAN'T DO THAT.
Apparantly I can only put music on the hard drive if I own it in an audio CD style. So I would need like 50+ CDs to get all my music on there. Because no, not allowed to rip from DVDs. That's not fair. And no, I can't copy it from my computer onto the hard drive. I can only stream. And NO. I can't stream without connecting to the network. And I can't connect to the network because Microsoft decided that installing any king of wireless adaptor into any of their consoles after the Wii and PS3 proved it could be done would be UNFAIR. Even if you bought the Elite version and expected something a little more than a HMDI cable and a bigger hard drive.

You might want to start reading Shamus Young and Lawrence Lessig.
They, like most sensible people, seem to be of the crazy old 19th century mindset of "you bought it, you own it, you can do with it what you like". Accordingly they think that intrusive DRM is the work of the devil.

Typical French wild overstatement of his - otherwise interesting - case, a nasty dose of existentialism and cultural self-loathing, copypastas Nietzsche with a conveniently-timed psychotic breakdown (193X-1946 :smallamused: ), responsible for numerous acts of cultural emesis in the guise of 'performance art', but at least he's not a worthless Marxist like 90% of recent French 'thinkers' seem to be.
