Here is another thing that might not have been thought about.

The post office DOES have DISCOUNT PROGRAMS for people who mail out a ton of things.

The discounts are useful and something that should be looked into for the mailing of this project if it hasnt been looked into already.

It is called Commercial Plus Pricing, and you need to send at least 2500 packages per month to qualify for it -- for the duration of the sending of all of the fallout from this event though, qualifying shouldnt be hard.

Just pledged about all of my pocket money. As a high school student, I'm not exactly rich, but with the amount of loot you get, that's not a problem at all. Thank you very much for all of these mystery prizes, Rich!

I don't know if we're going to make $1M or not (I'm only in for $25 - I have all the books, and the only thing that made sense to buy was the art print), but I did want to pay my compliments to Kaulguard's eloquent and heartfelt testimonial. Amen!

That's where I was... I bumped it from $25 to $40 for the patch, second coloring book, and the Sticky Shtick cards. I don't own the Game, but if I like the cards enough, I will probably order it.

Hey guys! You're nerds on the internet, right? So you like graphs, right?

I just made an ROC curve (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Receiver_operating_characteristic) for the kickstarter:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v322/azurasstar/kickstarter.gif

On the x axis is the proportion of people who have contributed to the drive, in order of the size of their contribution, from smallest to largest; on the y axis is the total amount of money pledged by everyone to the left of that point on the graph. For the sake of interpretation: These data are from the kickstarter page, taken at 2:32 PM CST on Feb. 18.
If everyone had pledged exactly the same amount of money, the graph would be a straight line between (0,0) and (1,1).
If one person had pledged all the money, the graph would be a step function, sticking to the bottom and then jumping up at the far right.
The larger the area under the curve, the more "long-tailed" the distribution is. A long tail indicates a relatively significant contribution of the "little guy" (a pattern you find, for instance, in online retail), while a short tail indicates that a few super-dedicated people are really driving the whole thing (which is what you find, for instance, for contributions of text to Wikipedia). This is a fairly long-tailed distribution, as these things go; you guys who only pledged $10 really did make a difference!
My script made some indefensible assumptions for simplicity's sake. The big one is, I assumed that everybody pledged exactly the minimum pledge amount for their reward. This is definitely wrong, since my total money estimate ended up at $764437, well undershooting the actual value. Since everything has been converted to proportions, if this faulty assumption underestimated the contributions of all pledge groups equally, it doesn't affect the end result. On the other hand, if the underestimation was unequally distributed across pledge amounts (for instance, if whoever who got the $5000 pledge actually forked over $200000 and that's the only reason my number is off), this inaccuracy could have significant implications for interpretation of this graph, so take it with a grain of salt.
Fun things to notice: Almost 20% of all backers are at the $10 price point, and they alone contributed about 3% of the total money the drive has raised to date.
The stingiest 40% of backers contributed about 10% of the total revenue.
About 40% of the total revenue came from the most generous 10% of the backers.
Here's the code (in Python) and the data I used:Code:
import tkFileDialog

file = tkFileDialog.askopenfile(mode='rb',title='Choose a file')
if file != None:
data = file.read()
file.close()

with open('roc.csv', 'w') as file:

amount = int(entry.split(',')[0])
number = int(entry.split(',')[1])

I've been watching this fundraiser, but I have to admit it's a bit confusing.

He's asking $222 for all 7 books. If I just buy them in the Giant's own shop it would cost only $170,65. I understand that this is a fundraiser, but aren't the funds meant to put the books back into print. A cost that, presumably, is also covered in the price of books bought via the web shop.

I would love to buy the entire OOTS collection. But $222 plus shipping is just excessive. Even $170 is already quite steep imho.

Unless you are outside of the US, the $222 is including shiping. You might want to recalculate just how much ookoodook would charge for all seven books once shipping is included.

And while I haven't run the numbers, I've been told that this drive is quite reasonable when it comes to international shipping the big box items.

Okay, this page has grown so large, I'm having trouble figuring out whether I can get multiple rewards. I just got one of the signed rewards, but I also want to get several of the newly printed books. I'm sure Rich has addressed this, but I can't find it amidst all of this information.

So, my question is: If I want multiple rewards must I:
a) create multiple accounts;
b) Pledge enough at the end for the signed rewards and the books and fill out a survery at the end saying what I want; or
c) something different.

I figure Rich is too busy to answer a question like this this close to the end, so I'm putting it to y'all.

depends on what you want and the text for each reward. Let us know what you are looking for

I went with A because I wanted several hp pads and stickers And the complete game, but the game is so big, it needs to be shipped separately anyway. And I added the art print to the game, since that can't be added to the swag pack.

I've done a second account when I wanted two entierly seperate pledge levels. Others have done the same. Some people have messaged Rich ahead of time and worked something out for small things. But I wouldn't recommend just upping your pledge and presuming Rich can handle it after the fact.

So either bite the bullet and risk pestering him while he is in Crunch Time and dealing with a massive amount of things at once, or just figure out if it is worth getting a second account.

One Note: a second account requires a new email address, but that's it. Just thought I should let you know ahead of time.

I've pledged the $10 donation. Honestly, I couldn't care less about the fridge magnet. I only want the PDFs, and I don't want to spend more money (I blew the rest of the money I hand on a copy of SoD from Ookadook).

If I simply don't add to my pledge/ignore the credit cart details/emails when they come round, will I still get the PDFs even if I don't get the fridge magnet?

You can say "I don't want a magnet" when the time comes, regardless of how much you pledge. The PDFs reach you as long as you hand over at least $10.

If you just want the pdf and no magnet, state this in the email you'll get when they're asking for your shipping address, which will come after the pledge is done. Leave a note there and you'll be golden. I'd advice you to still include your address, though.

Man, the one thing holding me back from pledging more was that Rich said he wasn't going to use the funds for himself. Now that that's off the table, I doubled it. Why didn't he do that sooner?

He's not really using the funds for himself - he's creating a general fund for his business. Which will result in him having less out of pocket expenses (and therefore more money to spend on personal stuff) in the future, but so is us paying for print runs which will leave him with excess stock of his products, even if we get a book out of the deal.

A lot of the preexisting prize's values were a result of forced scarcity / donor charity - I doubt the crayon drawings will require anywhere near $250 in materials, labor, and shipping. People were willing to pay that much because 1. They wanted the books reprinted 2. There was a limited supply and 3. Rich has put nearly a decade into the free product of the webcomic. One could argue that there is a limited supply of Rich's labor available for projects like this because people's future willingness to pay for stuff like this is dependent on an at least semi-active web comic, but the exclusivity also plays a role, particularly for the cameo.

What is true is that Rich will probably see more profit on the money after 850K mark. While some of the money sounds like it will go towards tech upgrades for Rich, which don't necessarily yield a lot of immediate profit, if he uses some of it to print book 5, for example, the yield on that will be huge. I'm not sure of the exact numbers involved, but I'm pretty sure the printing costs have in the past been well over half the price of the book, so if Rich gets free printing on book 5 out of this, the amount of money he will make off each book will more than double.

Better go get some Bearhugger's. We overdosed on Klatchian coffee it seems.

This really is an interesting psychological study. People are getting amped and throwing in another 5-10+ dollars, I'm sure. Hell, that's what I did. We take pride in Rich's webcomic and want to see it succeed (at the very least, smash through $1M!) and for our average pledge to be somewhere north of $80, most of our backers are putting up a lot of cash to see this work!

Whether he meant to or not, this conveniently ends on a weekend, where backers may be more prone to sipping on a glass of wine or beer (or three) right when the hype is hitting its climax. Rich may be the beneficiary of some "drunken shopping". :smallamused:

Well, if we abandoned sanity around
I don't understand the folks with the "this is insane" reactions. The average pledge is around $80 for 11,000+ fans, big deal. Concerts to see musicians play for 2 hours can cost that much and draw an equal number of fans. There's a rule of thumb that says only 10% of your fans will help in pledge drive. Did so many people not think OotS had over 100,000 fans?

Also, most kickstarter drives have a heavy few first days, a huge lull in the middle, and then a big push at the end. Most kickstarter drive owners do not keep adding swag every other day like Rich did. That is what has driven the steady momentum.

There's nothing insane about this. It is just a good product matched to a well run drive. I'd be curious how many future KS drives don't have new swag offerings made in the weeks after the original posting based on how effective it was for this drive.

I'm not doubting that Rich has done a damn fine job at running a consistently-successful drive. If you were able to catch the Excel spreadsheet being updated, you'll see the average donation per backer has gone up and up throughout the duration! To me, though, 11,000+ people pledging $80 is a BFD, especially for a webcomic!

Okay, I'll be honest, I never EVER imagined us getting to one-million dollars. I always thought it was far too high for even us to reach. Now, however, I'm beginning to rethink that. Even if we're still a couple thousand or so short by the morning of the 21st, I can imagine quite a few people upping their pledges in mass panic to try to reach the million mark.

So, how many people want to call the major news networks to try to get Rich an interview after the pledge total hits seven digits?

I was just thinking it was about time for a new reward level. Who thinks we'll hit 1M by tomorrow night?

If tomorrow is anything like today, it's actually possible. There's been something like 48K in the last 12.75 hours. And it really doesn't appear to be slowing down at all...

When you look at the MITD chart you can add coloring books in the 80$ pledge as well. That's how I read it (and that's why I upped my pledge to buy the game, too)

We don't know when (I believe it's some time this year but I can't remember wehre/if I actually read that). And I would imagine so, it's a fairly weak prize if nobody knows that's what it is (my theory is that it'll be not unlike Fruit Pie the Sorcerer, they'll get a cameo, show off their powers, be killed horribly, and get a small corner in the final montage splash-page at the end of the last book with all the other characters). But again, I don't know for sure.

A recap

About 48 hours to raise $91,000

That's $1895.83 an hour
about $31.60 a minute
about $0.53 a second

which is really odd that both would reduce to something that close.
Just goes to show that rounding up or down in finances is significant!

If this were still a job (40 hour work week), it would pay (before taxes and deferrals)
$75,833.33 a week
$3,943,333.33 a year

So,
The averages are starting to slump by 1.5%
Its only two data points, so It would be difficult to craft projections on them.
But rough projection would be $894,018 by Feb 21

I stand in humble awe of WampaX's predictions. His was the most detailed analysis of the numbers and even he did not actually expect to reach this high back on day 3. Not only have we (the fans, loyal followers, minions of the OotS) kept up the pace of the donations but considering the the highest categories had been grabbed by that point we have exceeded the level of donations of those first few days. We are within spitting distance of a cool $1,000,000. ($963,940) $63,000 in just the last 20 hours. I have upped my own pledge a couple of times since this began and am still amazed.

edit: mispelled WampaX, blasted fingers not doing what I want them to do.

and we are approaching the point where 600$/hr is enough. The million is home for sure. My guess is 1100k$-1200k$ now. With the final surge only just beginning i wouldn't completely discount 1300k$ or even surpassing the dock yet.

Edit: A surge brought the required rate for the million down to 587.5$/hr. We might hit it tonight (and I mean european time).

The 48 hours left mark is being passed now, and people are getting reminder mails extra surge likely incoming.

The elevation dock is at 1.5million. We'd have to raise roughly $10,500/hour nonstop for the next 48 hours to beat it. We'll crack a million easily though at this rate, with $586/hour needed.

See, this is why I should have stayed up. That Stick family portrait would have been the best thing ever.

I can just see myself trying to explain our pets. "Yeah, we have three cats. Yes, three. No, one of them's dead, but if you could include his ghostly presence, that would be great. Oh, yeah, they're called Microsoft, RedHat and Cisco, if you're going to label them. Oh, Cisco is green. Yes, green. You know how some cats people say are blue? Well he's like that, except he's a green tabby. Wait, should we give you pictures of the cats for you to see? Hang on, here's Mikey, sorry if it's a bit blurry, it didn't occur to us to take many pics of him until afterwards. Cisco is here, the only one I could find is of him wearing sunglasses, but that shouldn't be a problem. Note the shade of green! And here's RedHat, she's the one sitting on the pumpkins. Yes, pumpkins. We were trying to train her to stop sitting on our cacti."

(For the record, I didn't name them, blame my brother and my mom (he was eight at the time, and is very fascinated with computers. I can't account for my mother.). Red Hat changed their name to Red Fedora a while ago but RedHat is keeping hers, and Cisco is the name of a company I didn't even know about until after we named the cat that. Yes, we're all crazy. Especially my kitties.)

@David: High. But since I won't get to announce it until after I've finished the comic and the next chart update, we already may be way past where it would be and closing on the big prize. At which point it will become Mystery Prize #8.5. After all, there will be some declined credit cards and other problems, so we need to make sure we have enough cushion after the $1M mark so that we can STAY at the $1M mark!

Do we know yet who the three characters for the bonus PDFs were? I haven't seen anything, but I would have thought that they'd have made their choice by now.

Mentions were made that amongst those given to Rich as options were Therkla, the Cliffport PD and the Demon Cockroaches.

Someone was mentioning earlier in this thread that the pages in this topic roughly follow $10k increases in pledges... We've got ahead of ourselves a bit but it's simply amazing how true that's held thus far!

Finally plinked for the poster & patch. I'll be getting the other books piecemeal, but until I get my tax refund I can only do this. Thanks, Mr. Giant sir.

After poking around I am wondering if Kisckstarter will even bother to mention our drive. We are not featured on the front page or even listed as a high power project. I'm guess that while they may be forced to at least mention us, it will be like a one sentence "wow" and then they will go back to push the projects they acutally want ie. tech toys.

We've already been called out on the blog and featured as project of the day. I'm sure they'll do something for the million, too - it's only the third time that's happened (even if it's also the third time this month), after all.

Okay, I've gotta ask.

EDIT: That was entirely unintentional, I promise!

As near as I can tell, when this board first opened and Rich Burlew was getting started, people were confusing his name with D&D Game Designer Rich Baker (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Baker_(game_designer)). The fact that Rich Baker's name was a combination of Rich Burlew and Keith Baker (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keith_Baker_(game_designer)) led to even more hilarity. And thus the legend of the eldritch horror known as Rich Baker being imprisoned by the board was formed.

But you'd have to ask the people who were around when the board was first formed for the full details. :smallsmile:

They must. It is not the feat of Double Fine for raising 1 mi in 24hs and approaching 2mi now, but still, it is a comic project raising 1mi dollars.

You might want to make sure he clicked the $15 "I'm Participating" pledge point, because he can't do $10 PDF + $4 patch.

Well I've heard that Phil has ideas for a new Godot story. But he won't get to it until GG is all said and done. Just isn't enough time in the day to ink and draw TWO full page comics on a three-day-a-week schedule, apparently.

(Besides, coloring it would probably kill their colorist Cheyenne. And we can't have that. :smallwink:)
</slight tangent>

Wow, cool! More Buck Godot some time in the next few decades! :smallbiggrin:

That's great. Among our cats is a pair of identical twins, and they're named "dx" and "dy" to differentiate them.

Hopefully. :smallsmile: I wouldn't count it as an Iron Clad guarantee, myself (from what I recall, it is still in the "cool idea for a story arc" stage - nothing may come of it when all is said and done). But it is absolutely something that I am looking forward too.

I'm currently signed up for the $35 SSaDT reward. To ensure that I get all the goodies (minus the 8x10 picture sadly) I need to be pledging $45, 4 for the patch and 6 for the game expansion, correct? Am I missing anything?
