The Stick Awards II: Second Edition (Results and General Commentary)
Welcome to the Second Edition of The Stick Awards, where we celebrate the best that The Order of the Stick has to offer!
What are The Stick Awards? Originally created by Nazzo, the 102nd back in 2007, they were designed for us to decide what the best strips of OOTS were as chosen by our fellow Playgrounders. I have asked Nazzo, the 102nd if I could re-start this project from the beginning since so much time has passed since it first started (and we have so many new Playgrounders), and he very graciously gave his permission to let me relaunch The Stick Awards.
The format is very simple. Every week we will vote on what we think is the best strip out of the ten listed. Simply post which one (and ONLY one - no ties allowed ) strip out of the ten you thought was best. After the week is over, a winner is declared and we move on to the next set of strips. Each set of strips will have its own thread so people won't be confused as to which one we are currently voting on.
When we have voted on one hundred strips, we take a bit of a break and figure out the best of those previous strips. The winner of each of the previous ten threads will be entered into a one week playoff to determine the Best of the Hundred. If we should reach one thousand strips, the winner of the ten previous Best of the Hundreds will determine the Best of the Thousand.
===
EDIT: 7/22/13: After some discussion in thread, I am going to go with a semi-final/finals tournament for the Best of the Hundreds. The winners of the Stick Awards from the first five rounds will be in one semi-final, the winners of the second five rounds in the second semi-final. Each of these semi-finals will last only five days.
The winner of those two 'semi-finals' plus the two strips that got the most votes during those 'semi-finals' move on to the 'finals', which will also last five days. Think of these two extra strips as the 'wild card' entrants.
Each winner of the Best of the Hundred will move one to the Best of the Thousand tourment, which will be held when we reach 1000 strips.
Once the Best of the Hundred tournment is up, we move back to the Stick Awards, where we left off.
=====
And if we should ever catch up with the main strip? We'll have a quick runoff of winners that are still there (Best of the Rest?) and start off all over again with the Stick Awards III.
We will start with the very first set of strips in the archive, which I will post after I see if there is any discussion on the format of The Stick Awards II.
---
Please use this thread if you have any suggestions, questions or comments about The Stick Awards as they unfold.
---
And, of course, many thanks to Nazzo, the 102nd for coming up with the original Stick Awards, whose results can be read here.

Re: The Stick Awards II: Second Edition (Results and General Commentary)
People familiar with the original The Stick Awards may note that I've chosen to go for ten strips at a time instead of five. Part of this is pacing as since there is now so many strips around, it'll still take us almost two years to catch up with Comic #887 even if we do them in batches of ten (one week at a time). Also, the original The Stick Awards were originally in batches of ten (when the forum still had a poll feature) before various circumstances made them move to five for the majority of the awards run.
Now if the forumites would prefer to have The Stick Awards II: Second Edition stay to the five at a time format (and then have the Best of the Quarter as well), I'm down with that. I'm just a glorified curator after all. But if we do stick with the five at a time format, I'm gonna cut the voting time period down to five days. Doing that will mean that it would take a little over two and a half years to catch up with #887. I'm good either way.
So if anyone wants to make any comments/suggestions before I launch the first batch, nows the time.

Cool thread.
Two years is a while. How about 20 at a time? Or how about 10 strips every five days?

Re: The Stick Awards II: Second Edition (Results and General Commentary)
Twenty at a time is just too much, IMO. I want a slightly narrower focus than that.
Also my comment about two years wasn't so much to say "OMG, this is gonna take forever" so much as instead to say "This is a project where we intentionally want to take our time doing it." A casual stroll through the archives as it were instead of speed run.
Plus that will give us time to cover the comics that The Giant posts in the meantime.
Ten strips in five days might be doable though. After all, if people are only responding to the threads for the first four days or so, there's no real reason to wait until going to the next batch. The only real reason I said a week is because that's how long the original Stick Awards was (before shifting to a slightly smaller time period later on). Well that, and I want people who only come onto the forum every once in a while to have the chance to say what they think.Last edited by Porthos; 2013-05-14 at 06:20 PM.

Re: The Stick Awards II: Second Edition (Results and General Commentary)
I'm fine with 10. With a bigger window you maybe have more hard decisions on the way, which is (I think) more entertaining. (Also 10 is a nice number)
As for the Top 100(/1000) Play-offs: Since this strips already survived one round, I would maybe consider a different voting approach for them (10 is not the greatest number for that :/).
Maybe something like first voting on two 5-strip-batches (organized in a determined fashion, so maybe first batch 101-150, second 151-200, or odd decade batch vs. even decade - I would vote on both batches in the same week, but you could add a week for separate voting), first advances to final (or maybe even the two bests advance to half-finals, adding an additional voting-round, with first winner of one batch against second of the other - maybe only adding half-finals for the Top 1000, if we reach them)
For the update schedule: think 1 week is fine (makes updating easier, since you can just update every <favourite weekday>), other option would be to couple this to the comic-update (like the Favourite Character Tournament), but I would prefer the fixed time.

Re: The Stick Awards II: Second Edition (Results and General Commentary)
Interesting idea. I'll let it ruminate in my head for a bit to see if there is an easy way to do it. It's gonna be a while before we get to that point anyway.
TBH, the nerd in me just liked the simplicity of a ever increasing Base Ten cutoff.

Re: The Stick Awards II: Second Edition (Results and General Commentary)
Quick question: How do we handle a tie (if it comes to one)? Do we simply advance two strips? Or will there be an additional voting? (One solution I would like (if you are ok with that) is that you cast your vote last, and therefore you could break a tie.)

Re: The Stick Awards II: Second Edition (Results and General Commentary)
I think there was a quick 1 or 2 day runoff last time. But I'm fine with holding my vote last to break any ties. It's what I usually do when I am running other contests/officiating rule votes in fantasy leagues elsewhere on the net.

Re: The Stick Awards II: Second Edition (Results and General Commentary)
Porthos' answer to me was based on my speculation about the ThoorPrayer strip doing well in the last interation of the contest. So unless there was a misunderstanding somewhere along the line...no, he means that ThorPrayer was the leading strip at whatever point it was that the other version stopped.

Re: The Stick Awards II: Second Edition (Results and General Commentary)
Porthos is only talking about the vote for strips 1-10.
Since the old thread including results is still available, you can look it up (only some voting rounds are missing. And In the top1-100 voting thread you can find the top3 of each round before)
To make it short: there isn't an overall champion listed in that thread, only top100 up to 600 (or 5-batches up to 680)Last edited by ChristianSt; 2013-05-20 at 03:21 PM. Reason: Grammar

I'm guessing you're using the old format for the results.

#7 ThorPrayer(link to comic)
I'd just add a spoiler tag for the different levels of play offs, also, here are a couple of custom smiley faces threads, cause I think adding a few of them would be neat on strips that feature a character who doesn't have an official smiley.

More or less, yeah. Might play with the formatting a bit, but I'm going to use the general format that Nazzo, the 102nd used.

Hopefully they'll be updated by the time the 800s roll 'round. I have a hunch we might, just might, need a Durkula smiley somewhere along the line.

Re: The Stick Awards II: Second Edition (Results and General Commentary)
Yep. Already done so, as a matter of fact.
I figured so much time had passed, and there were so many new people on the board, that a fresh start would be a good idea. After all, it's been over six years since the first batch started. That's like, forever, in Internet Time.
Also, the Stick Awards was last done a couple of years ago (July 2011). That's another reason I wanted a fresh start. If it had been updated more recently, that would be one thing. As is...
New coordinator, new beginning, I thought.Last edited by Porthos; 2013-05-20 at 07:25 PM.

Re: The Stick Awards II: Second Edition (Results and General Commentary)
I'm curious if Rich reads the Stick Award threads (or if he read the first Stick Awards), and if he gets a kick out of seeing people discussing their favorites.
For example, I wonder if he's reading the current thread (#11-20) and thinking "no way nobody voted for 18! I remember coming with that joke and so and so..."

Re: The Stick Awards II: Second Edition (Results and General Commentary)
I personally tend to think that Rich reads almost everything that goes into the The Order of the Stick forum. That's because he always posts when he feels that he need to interfere, mostly for moderating issues and ending fruitless debates.
But he never posted on any of the old threads of the first Stick Awards edition. Maybe because there was never and endless argument in them? Or maybe he likes it and thinks that this should go on forever. The Hundred Second

Re: The Stick Awards II: Second Edition (Results and General Commentary)
You know, I gots to admit, I'll a little surprised to see such variance in the voting this time around from the first. OK, the results might be skewed in the early going a bit due to so many people just voting in polls rather than making their views public by actually posting them (what's with that, BTW? It ain't that hard to quickly type a number and hit the Submit Reply button ).
Still, it is noteworthy. In each of the four rounds so far, there has been a different winner. In fact, in three of them, the winner didn't even crack the Top Three previously.
Here are the results from the previous version of the contest:
1-10: 1) 7 2) 3 3) 4
11-20: 1) 20 2) 14 3) 12
21-30: 1) 28 2) 25 3) 30
31-40: 1) 40 2) 37 3) 31
Now here are the results of the current contest:
1-10: 1) 4 2) 7 3) 10
11-20: 1) 13 2) 16 3) 20
21-30: 1) 24 2) 22 3) 25
31-40: 1) 38 2) 37 3) 40
Furthermore, in two out of four cases, two of the top three are different. And in one case, the last winner failed to chart at all.
Different make up of the board? Small Sample Size shenanigans? Changing tastes? Dunno. But I find it interesting nonetheless.
Mind, I expect the losing streak to be broken after this week. I've been wrong before though, so who knows?Concluded: The Stick Awards II: Second Edition

One suggestion for the results: would a "Top3-Smilies-count" be interesting? (so Elan/Durkon scored 3, Roy/V 2 and Xykon/Thor 1 as of Round 4)

Re: The Stick Awards II: Second Edition (Results and General Commentary)
We're coming up soon(-ish) to the Best of the Hundred tournament, and I've been giving some thought to the suggestions given in this thread about how to deal with it.
So here is a tentative plan that I want to throw out and see what people think:
Instead of having a one-week Best of the Hundred with all ten winners, there will be a pair of 'semi-final' contests, followed by the 'finals'. Each only lasting five days, instead of seven.
The winner of those two 'semi-finals' plus the two strips that got the most votes during those 'semi-finals' move on to the 'finals'. Think of these two extra strips as the 'wild card' entrants.
Example:
Strips 1,11,21,31,41,51,61,71,81, and 91 get in the torunament.
After Semi Final Number One the totals are:
1 5 votes
11 6 votes
21 6 votes
31 2 votes
41 11 votes
and
After Semi Final Number Two the totals are:
51 10 votes
61 2 votes
71 9 votes
81 8 votes
91 5 votes.
Which would give:
Finals
41
51
71
81
41 and 51 would move on thanks to winning the semi's. 71 and 81 get in thanks to getting the most votes from the non-winners. So, yes, this means that one semi might get three entrants while the other, only one.
This encourages voting.
If there is a tie for first, both entrants get in and there is one less wild card.
If there is a tie for the second wild card, eh, let em both in.
And if one semi-final winner still ends up with less votes than a strip that isn't a wild card winner? Eh. Winner is winner. Moves on by default.
The total time to do this would be 15 days. Or, basically, two weeks of normal voting.
Alternatively, we just do the regular 10 strip vote over seven days.
I'm good either way. But I must admit I've come to like the idea of giving the runners up a chance as to give a bit of variety in the final vote.Concluded: The Stick Awards II: Second Edition

Re: The Stick Awards II: Second Edition (Results and General Commentary)
Hmm, I think there are merits for both structures. Having a single round of the ten winners seems like the easiest and most logical way to do it, and preserves the format/timing of the previous rounds. Clear, simple and decisve, and takes less time than the alternative.
The semi-final/final thing looks fun. It is a bit more fiddly, but might be more interesting and produce a more nuanced result. And who cares about taking a little more time?
I'll happily participate either way, but if forced to choose, I'd go for the semi-final/final structure.
PS thanks again Porthos for organising the Stick Awards! The prison was full of British officers who had sworn to die, rather than be captured.
